In the spirit of its creator, Lézard Vert (Green Lizard) is much more than a music band. It hails a concept of participation, a record label in itself, of which it boldly assumes the parenthood, but where each musician plays on musical pieces of their peers. A concept that shaped from the Carrousel experience. During a prolonged retreat in Manapany “country of Lézard Vert”, Zoun then started to lay the foundation for the album eponymous album. Zoun concurrently follows the career of two accomplished musicians, namely; Teddy Baptiste and Kiki Mariapin, with whom he occasionally performed, with Gilbert Pounia who provoked the spark leading to the encounter with Philippe De Magnée, a Belgium born sound engineer, invited on Reunion island to record Ziskakan.

Pioneer of the electric maloya, agile composer of various influences, Zoun, is proud to see his Lézard Vert resurface on turntables. This new version initiated by Wazis Pounia gave birth to a collaboration between Ziskakan and the Mauritian label, Babani Records. The remastering has been entrusted to Neil Combstock, sound engineer of the label, based in the United Kingdom and the illustration to the Mauritian artist, Guillaume Clarisse, all under the art direction of Avneesh Bacha. This reissue in 33turns vinyl discs and streaming has the merit of bringing to the ear a whole new generation, recorded in 1983, a key era in the history of Reunionese music. With the passing of time, a number of musical treasures have been unfortunately lost, forgotten, or never even recorded. Thus, when the opportune presents itself, it is of our duty to honour them with a re-publishing.

With his first album dating back to 2001, Poirier is a prolific, creative and eclectic Canadian producer / musician with a 20 year journey of creating music. Constant in his albums and DJ performances is a desire to build bridges between different languages, communities, and cultures. His open, uninhibited musical mind means that his works bend boundaries, resulting in compositions that mix several styles and eras. He now has produced a total of 11 albums and many EPs with labels such as Ninja Tune, Nice Up Records and, more recently, Wonderwheel Recordings. Active in Montreal, his successful monthly dance party Qualité de Luxe is dedicated to African and Caribbean music, attracting crowds for over six years. Poirier is also the man behind Bounce le Gros and Karnival, parties with legendary status in Montreal nightlife history. 

As usual with Poirier, it's hard to pin point all the genres and references on his new album. Soft Power has an irresistible warm vibe that will make anyone move and dance. It's warm, it's acoustic, it's electronic. Tracks "Café Com Leite" feat. Flavia Coelho and "Me Leva" feat. Flavia Nascimento transport the listener to Brazil while "Sim Bombei" and "Sowia", both featuring Samito, while the Sounds of West Africa influence "Nidiaye Sam" feat. Daby Touré. Then it’s across the Atlantic to Montréal and Mexico with "Contigo" feat. Boogat, while "Pull Up Dat" feat. Red Fox is a Jamaican jam perfect for any dancehall party. "Nou Pare" feat. Coralie Hérard captures the heart of Haiti while "Do Kase" feat. Mélissa Laveaux fuses Canada and France with Haïti in the background. In his instrumental tracks, Poirier throws an afro house party at 4am with "The Junction", travels back in time on an island in the Mediterranean Sea circa 1987 with "Forma", and, finally, relaxes in the sun with "Coconut Beach."

MIMS is excited to highlight a song from the wonderful and now-obscure album “Lézard Vert” by a Reunion Island supergroup led by composer/musician, Zoun. Originally released  on cassette in 1983 by local production company, Ziskakan, “Lézard Vert” was a leap forward for electric maloya, a meeting of modern-day musical technology and music (jazz, funk, etc) and the maloya music of Reunion, which has origins in the music of African and Malagasy slaves and Indian indentured workers on the island, and is traditionally accompanied by percussion and a musical bow.  This significant recording sees worldwide digital release tomorrow on Mauritius-based Babani Records, following a Reunion-only vinyl release earlier this year. 

On “Lézard Vert”, composer, flautist and guitarist, Zoun aka. Joseph Toquet, was joined by guitarist and composer, Jean-Philippe Bideau, fellow composer and musician Teddy Baptiste on guitar and congas, Kiki Mariapin on tabla and percussion, and mysterious Joel on triangle.  Across the album Zoun, Baptiste and Bideau act as leaders on their own compositions, whilst backed by each, and Kiki and Joel, generally speaking. A musical carousel experience, you might say. Like many accomplished musicians in Reunion, they had until this time found much on the rather staid “ballroom” live music industry. With the advent of discos and DJs playing popular music, they took an opportunity to compose, experiment and record more adventurous music, rooted in traditional maloya, historically banned on the island for its association with the plight of slavery, but played with electric guitars and incorporating wider influences such as jazz and funk. 

Today we highlight “Lune”, arguably the most melancholic song on the album, written & led by Jean-Philippe Bidea, featuring beautiful guitar solos by Bideau, Baptiste and additional guest Patrick Sida. Jean Philippe was the youngest of the crew and the only one to have learned the basics at a very young age at a musical conservatory, far from the wild rhythms of the dance orchestras. Back in Reunion he developed his musical chops rapidly playing and studying with the best, including his brother Tot, a renowned saxophonist, and at just 16 years of age, he started composing under Teddy Baptiste’s protective gaze.

 In 1982, the year of his baccalaureate, Jean-Philippe joined Zoun (Toquet), Teddy (Baptiste) and Kiki (Mariapin) at the CRAC studios, to record the audiocassette of Lézard Vert. With his three compositions and his crystal-clear solos, he was much more than mere foil to the elder, seasoned musicians, despite his young age.
