the great henhouse concerto

Escrita inicialmente para el Trío Apolo de Cochabamba, esta pieza es la primera de algo que a su debido tiempo se convertirá en una serie de Beethovenianas bolivianas. 

Se trata de propiciar un diálogo entre Beethoven y las tradiciones y prácticas del folclore boliviano. 

Naturalmente que esto no estaría ocurriendo si no fuera por el precedente inspirador de las Bachianas Brasileiras de Heitor Villa-Lobos, a quien, además de a Bolivia y a Beethoven, esta serie rinde homenaje.

Written initially for Trío Apolo of Cochabamba, this piece is the first of something that in due course is intended to become a series of Beethovenianas Bolivianas. 

The intention is to propitiate a dialogue between Beethoven and traditions and practices of Bolivian folk music. 

Naturally this would not be happening were it not for the inspirational precedent of Heitor Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras. This new piece pays homage to him, as well as to Bolivia and to Beethoven.

Giorgio Bianchi - Fragment

Mostly consisting of hydrophone recordings made at Fontburn Reservoire in Northumberland, this piece was made to accompany an exhibition of Louise Plant's stone sculptures (see image) based upon the eddies and vortices made in water by rowing. I was struck by the bright, almost glassy quality of the hydrophone recordings, and so have also done some convolution filtering with samples of crystal wineglasses. The piece is quiet and contemplative, playing with the idea that elements can transform into one another. Just as Louise has transformed forms observed in water into stone, I've tried to find a solid resonance to the sound of water. Louise's exhibition runs 224th-26th August, then again 31st Aug to 1st Sept at Cheeseburn Grange Sculpture Gardens, near Stamfordham, Northumberland.

The NRC - New River Train

A different mix of our song Dragon Hills (A Wistful Reminiscence of Longed for Landscapes) on the latest volume of Cold Spring's John Barleycorn Reborn series.  The version on the CD was recorded and realised in the dark days of lockdown in April 2020; this version presents Rachel's original unedited voice & guitar take to which Sean adds an ostinato on the bass synth (taken from the Cioconna of Marcello's Sonata #12, op. 2) and glissando guitar.

All hills are Dragon Hills.  August 11th 2020
