a deer in the headlights

The hiss of the old tape introduces a world both familiar and alien. The tape's imperfections add a layer of texture creating a soundscape shaped by memory and erosion. The sound is haunting, not in the sense of fear, but in the way it evokes a sense of loss. The aural landscape is immediately apparent: an open window and the music is playing. As the tape continues, the listener can begin to pick out specific sounds. The conversations of children, the rhythmic clatter of a passing vehicle. The open window becomes a portal, a gateway between the interior and the exterior, the private and the public. The tape runs on, the hiss a constant companion. The open window remains a constant presence and the music becomes a supplement of the narrative. The recording ends, leaving the listener suspended in time. 

From an Old Tape

Orcae creates experimental music firmly rooted in the now. A systematic and unpremeditated approach to free improvisation, yielding ephemeral soundscapes that drift along with the solar winds through drone, ambient and electronica territories.
Their performances are like slowly unravelling a ball of string without knowing (or really caring) where it leads: an exploration of delicate suspended states, of auditory photographs scrutinised to reveal their texture and grain, and of interplay between what constitutes noise, what constitutes music, and sometimes what is simply absurd.

Two Weird Tales is a slow and sometimes hazardous sonic amble, created during a collective electronic improvisation. The purely digital electronic textures blend and overlap in a continuous and conflicting flow – a desertic soundtrack for random thoughts that wander deep into the uncanny valley.

This piece explores the sounds of fictional and non-fictional conflict in an abstract way. It's a binaural render of a 3rd Order Ambisonic mix, so wear headphones to enjoy all of the spatial details.
The piece is loosely divided into 3 sections: the Vietnam War, submarine warfare (inside and out a submarine) and Sirens.
