Soft, growing rain wraps around the resonate reeds of the bass clarinet to evoke and create new musical landscapes.  The incredibly diverse and imaginative sounds created by Sarah Watts on her instrument makes for a rich field to pick, dig and build from. Her technical prowess and musicality are the source of all the sounds heard and these sounds are transformed and overlaid using various digital tools and environments. Ultimately, the work is a journey to and from the contemplative quality of falling rain.  The gift of rain is the gift of life.

I was presented the opportunity in early October 2021 to write an electroacoustic piece for a dance performance that explored the feelings of isolationism, mundanity, and uncertainty associated with life during the lockdown.  The dancer had the idea to build the piece around the sounds of hand washing and a cold emotionless voice counting.  I ran with that idea and created this piece.

'In a wash of processed guitar and piano, audio recordings made in 2021 for other projects are repurposed, pressured and warped for August Underflow. The memory of the machine is compared to the memory of the human mind. The nature of data stored in both the mind and machinery is vulnerable to the corruption of external forces. If the human memory and machine fail, we only have now- immediately.'

August Underflow is an audiovisual collaboration, with featured visual art from Keesha Field. It was commissioned for Konzertprojekt's Sound Stories: Part 2 and was premiered at St. Stephen's Uniting Church in Sydney, 12th February 2022.

I was walking through the forest and found a beautiful flower. Suddenly I heard a very quiet sound. I came closer, directly to the plant, and realized that the sound was coming directly from the flower! Immediately I took my recorder and recorded the sound of it. I put it here without an edition, just amplified. Btw, after this people told me that this is the poisonous flower – Atropa belladonna.

I'm a Baltimore area pianist and media composer.  As a media composer, a lot of my music tends to be orchestral, but I often incorporate synths and found sounds into my compositions as well.  My genres tend to range from experimental to more traditional sounding film score type music, but I do like to experiment outside of my comfort zone from time to time.
