Sound as sculpture - Space as experience - Ear as instrument

Nothingness

Exploring space as a experience and the ear as an instrument. When listening to the piece, move around the space you are in, and the sound will change. This allows you to compose your own piece by your choice of navigation through space. Towards the end of the piece the space being explored is internalised into the your head by triggering distortion product otoacoustic emissions. The work looks at space, physicality and sound as a sculptural material.

The installation involves visual objects which are placed throughout the space. This is accompanied by a sound piece devised from recordings of the visual objects and electronic noise. The audience is invited to travel through the space. As they do, their perception of the sound will adjust with their movements, allowing them to construct their own personal experience. This is achieved by triggering distortion product otoacoustic emissions, which are supplementary tones produced by the cochlea.

Shimmer is an installation examining the relationship between sound, sculpture and space. The work features a quadraphonic electronic sound piece and a visual fabric sculpture. The piece creates sculptural entities from sound, space and visual materials. 

The listener is invited to walk around the installation space, and as they do so, their perception of the sonic piece will change and adjust according to their movement. This is achieved by triggering distortion product otoacoustic emissions, which are supplementary tones produced by the cochlea. These emissions adjust with movement of the head and create an enveloping and immersive experience.

Ben Nigel Potts is an artist exploring the relationship between sound and sculpture through installation art. His work removes sound from the musical context and explores space, physicality, audience participation / interactivity, algorithmic generation and extreme minimalism/simplicity. His works are characterised by their intense physical effects created by auditory distortions (distortion product otoacoustic emissions) and the invitation to the audience to form their own individual experience through space and movement.
