Miles could play over any type of music from any era and make it sound great. Every decade brought a new sound. This was Miles' post 70's fusion style. Much slicker. Technology had moved on in the 80's and he could now exploit synths, sequencers and drum machines.
Tutu was mostly a bunch of completed but unreleased tracks written by Marcus Miller. Wisely Marcus asked Miles to play on it and took it to the next level!
This track is named in tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the first black Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, South 
Miles received the 1987 Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Soloist Grammy Award for his performance on Tutu. Initially Tutu was panned by the critics but, you know what Miles would say to them? "So What!"

Here's my respectful re-imagining of the Jazz standard "So What" by Miles Davis. To say it is not like the original is an understatement. It's funky. 
I did release a version with no horns on it. I did ask some Soundcloud trumpeters for a collaboration but they shied away! Can't blame them, these are big boots to fill. 
The trumpeter who not only has the hutzpah but also the talent to play Miles is Jordy Waelauruw from Jakarta / Indonesia.  You can find him at https://soundcloud.com/jordy-trumpet
So my version has two Steely Dan type guitar solos and breaks into a swing jazz section in between. See if you can spot my vocal debut!
What I like about Miles is that he reinvented himself every decade he was playing. He also reinvented jazz with the album 'Kind of Blue' from which 'So What' was the opening track.
The actor Dennis Hopper, in an interview in 2008 with Men's Journal, claims that Davis named the song after intellectual conversations with Hopper, in which Hopper would reply, "So what?"
According to Wikipedia...
"So What" is one of the best known examples of modal jazz, set in the Dorian mode and consisting of 16 bars of D Dorian, followed by eight bars of E♭ Dorian and another eight of D Dorian. This AABA structure puts it in the thirty-two-bar format of American popular song.
I didn't know that.... I just played it... but then I say the same as Miles...SO WHAT!

For this track I've gone back to my blues roots. The solo starts off very clean but soon descends into anarchy. The name of the preset I used on my guitar pedal is 'Bonamassa' that should tell you all you need to know! Seriously, the wah wah Rock Blues thing is how I used to do it. So now I have proven I still can get down mean and dirtay. All Blues is classic Miles Davis first appearing on the influential 1959 Columbia album Kind of Blue.

This track features my usual brand of mayhem and madness when covering jazz standards.  I've underpinned it with a modern house beat that really makes it swing. Originally a 1963 jazz composition by the English jazz pianist Victor Feldman and the jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. It's a popular choice with drummers because it features many stops where drum fills can be, and are, unleashed!

This is another Miles Davis track from his landmark Kind of Blue album.  Blue in Green's structure is modal. It has long been speculated that pianist Bill Evans wrote it, not Miles. See if you can spot my nod to 'So What' on it!

My version of this track is a mix of conventional interpretation and acid jazz! Milestones is one of Miles first forays into the developing modal jazz experiments. There's a bass solo followed by a Jimi Hendrix style heavy rock lead guitar solo. I'm sure Miles would approve, he was the ultimate musical pioneer!

Miles Davis ---- Milestones

Miles Davis did this tune on his Blue Moods album (1955), released on Charles Mingus' Debut Records label. It brought Davis together with Mingus on bass, trombonist Britt Woodman, vibraphonist Teddy Charles, and drummer Elvin Jones. The arrangement of "Alone Together" is by Mingus, while the other tracks were arranged by Charles.
"Alone Together" was composed by Arthur Schwartz with lyrics by Howard Dietz. It was introduced in the Broadway musical Flying Colors in 1932 by Jean Sargent.
The song soon became a hit, with Leo Reisman and His Orchestra's 1932 recording being the first to reach the charts. It is the most popular of Schwartz and Dietz's collaborations and has become a jazz standard.

Alone Together ---- Miles Davis (downloadable)

This is what it might have sounded like had Jimi survived to play with Miles Davis during Miles' Tutu/Amandla period (1986). For the first time Miles could embrace synthesizers, sequencing, and drum machines. No doubt Jimi would have too. Add to that a producer who could play bass every bit as well as he could produce, Marcus Miller, and you have a recipe for some awesome music.
On this track I play guitars and sequence Miles trumpet. I am ably assisted by the immensely talented Steve Shone https://soundcloud.com/palmgrease on bass. Don't miss his bass solo at 3 minutes in, Marcus would be proud!
