Bensley – A name which has remained a talking point across the genre since the announcement of his exclusive signing to Ram Records. Heralding from the city of Toronto, known for being a hotbed for the drum & bass genre, Bensley has stood as an anomaly.

In its 20 year plus history, never before has the RAM imprint created a journey as unique as Bensley’s. If you scour the internet, you won’t find one single release, an upload or even any previous history on the producer. Yet all it took was a one single demo to attract the attention of the acclaimed electronic music label. The RAM HQ was instantly enveloped by Bensley’s technically adept and musical personality, with the demos blowing the roof off the Hornchurch office on first listen. 

Bensley ‘let the music do the talking’… Quite literally. On first listen to ‘Fandango’, a precursor for what’s yet to come, you’ll instantly tune in to why he was snapped up so quickly. His innovative composition appeals to even the hardiest of heads – but it also builds a bridge between the commercial and the underground.

Straight away, you can hear the heavily influenced tinkling of his jazz musician grandfather; Bensley is also an accomplished saxophone player, having traveled extensively with his school band. An artist who’s just as inspired by the contemporary sounds of Wilkinson and Loadstar, as much as jazz pioneers Dave Brubeck and Charlie Parker, the depth of his musicality goes deeper than a DAW interface.

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.

Bensley’s story is one of the most illustrious across drum & bass. Plucked from relative obscurity, he pathed his way through legendary competition, heralded as the genre’s wonder kid. Dropping a full LP of fresh cuts after showcasing a just tiny glimpse of his production standard, his music was met with awe. And just over a year later, he’s continued with a succession of releases pedestalling a talent that’s only continuing to grow.

Using the full ethereal atmospherics of elevating note arpeggios and plucking synths, Bensley is back with his full sound scale. Rattling percussion filters between space-like stabs and humanistic samples, breaking up the mix then pushing it down into unconventional breaks. Demonstrating a growing complexity seldom seen in producers so young, once again Bensley proves his commitment to musicianship. One which hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Expect to hear these fresh cuts from Bensley dropped on crowds from London to the USA this summer. A perfect introduction to the summer season, momentum is only growing for this producer’s already stellar discography.
