Get Physical’s international roster now turns to Brazil for a new single from key Latin American players Leo Janeiro and Hauy, while Japan’s Hiroshi Watanabe steps up with an excellent remix. 

Leo Janeiro is considered one of the most important names in the Brazilian electronic scene, as well as dj’ing and producing he is a respected curator and A&R. Earlier in the year, Leo mixed Get Physical Presents: Cocada, a brand-new compilation put together in cooperation with the Brazil Music Conference. Toronto-based artist Hauy, who also played a fantastic set at Burning Man 2017, was one of the many producers who appeared on the compilation. Both artists are playing a vital role in evolving the Brazilian scene and helping to bring it to the world’s attention. Now they link once more to show why the likes of Joris Voorn and Lee Burridge have signed or supported their music before now. 

Stylish opener ‘Pure Bliss’ is the sort of elegant melodic techno the label is known for. Broad pads stretch off to the horizon as keys bring cosmic vibes to the expansive drums. It’s an astral, spacious track to really zone out to. 

The equally spine-tingling ‘Enigma’ is another voyage through the galaxies. The supple, subtle drums are perfectly stripped back and allow the gorgeous synths to dance about like the aura borealis in the absorbing atmosphere above. It’s dreamy techno that really carries emotional impact. 

Tokyo-based Hiroshi Watanabe has been one of Japan's leading electronic dance music artists over the last 20 years. He’s released on great labels like Transmat and brings that serene techno sound to this remix. It is nine minutes of dancing drums and hits, soaring synth pads and futuristic soul that leaves you in awe of the beauty of it. 

This is a terrific package of high class and elegant techno.

Get Physical continue with a busy November, this time with a superb EP from Russian born, Germany based Yulia Niko featuring a remix from Derek Marin. 

Niko was intoxicated with dance music from a young age and soon got her first residency in Sochi. She has since spent time in New York before settling in Berlin and has now set up her own vinyl only TochnoTechno label. She has also released on Crosstown Rebels, Baile Musik, Nervous Records, Plant74, played parties in LA, live on Mixmag who named her as one to watch in 2017 and has also toured South America this year. 

Superb opener and title cut ‘Acid Meow’ is a slick, stylish deep house track with warm dub chords. A molten, meandering acid line runs through it and the prickly percussion adds another layer that helps sink you into a state of hypnosis. It’s one to work the floor into a tasteful lather, with subtle vocals finishing it off in charming fashion. 

Derek Marin is a drummer turned techno producer known for his productions on labels like Plastic City, Superfreq and Nervous Records. He uses his skills to flip ‘Acid Meow’ into a serene track with thoughtful, far sighted pads and the original’s acid line encouraging you to get lost in the music. It’s an atmospheric and absorbing groove, no doubt. 

Finally, ‘Wake Up’ gets busy with bubbly drums and synths all making you want to move. Swirling pads add depth to the track and freaky bits of alien sound design make it all the more cinematic. 

This is a wonderfully effective EP that shows off Yulia Niko’s ever evolving skills.

For the label’s latest, DoubtingThomas turns in the exceptional GAAZOL003. Featuring three originals from the main man as well as a remix from Beste Modus man Diego Krause, it’s a colourful, spirited release that’s high on top-class sounds from the offset.

Ushering us in is the sounds of the title track. A sprightly, vibe-heavy cut that’s notable for its quick-footed, nimble aesthetics, it kicks off in fairly innocuous fashion before a captivating baseline rears its head. Keeping us second-guessing throughout, it’s full of twists, turns and suspense, a clever ploy that’s at the heart of the producer’s most-renowned works. The original is then complimented by Krause’s remix, which takes a more upfront, dancefloor driven approach. Notable for its clever drum work and meandering outlook, it’s a fitting, contrasting celebration to the original’s many charms.

The B side gets underway with ‘Drive’, a flair-filled cut that features Riviere at his most classy. An intricate, smile-inducing jam, it’s indicative of the sort of atmosphere-building track that the likes of Zip and Ricardo Villalobos tend to utilise to great effect. Culminating matters is the sounds of ‘Wakarimasen’, a zippy, synth-heavy track full of unusual, off-kilter field sounds and samples aplenty. Another release that showcases the range and depth at the heart of DoubtingThomas’ music, this is a special release — and a notable one for a producer (and a label) that continue to make great strides.

Stimming & Lazarusman - Your Dreams (Tiefschwarz remix)

In the afterglow of rave’s white heat, the mid-90s were a period of going as far out in all directions as possible – and @Luke-Slater’s The 7th Plain tracks were certainly about exploration of the deep space of the imagination. Cosmic, analogue, orchestrated, they still represent some of the most emotionally intense music ever to come out of the techno realm. Whether built on percussive frameworks or sweeping nebulas of dissipated sound, Slater’s synthesizers still sing space-travelers’ tales compellingly and beautifully.

‘Chronicles III’ is made up solely of music from the General Production Recordings label catalogue and stylistically skews less toward percussive techno-funk and more toward free-form broken rhythms – though tracks such as “Lost”, “Time Melts” or “Millentum” stand strong as hybrid pillars of both.

Russian producer Nocow returns to Rekids with an enthralling full-length album entitled ‘Atoner’ this November.

Real name Aleksei Nikitin, Nocow is known for his versatility, producing a large body of genre spanning work on labels like Clone Royal Oak, Figure, Fauxpas Musik, Gost Zvuk and Styrax. The St. Petersburg-based producer debuted on Rekids last year with his ‘Samaya Dolgaya Noch’ EP, a mellow release complete with vocal driven cuts as well as 2-step rhythms, and now returns with a myriad of productions in a fourteen track album entitled ‘Atoner’.

‘Atoner’ opens with an eponymous track that gently unravels with soaring synths and subtle percussion before Nocow’s voice emerges alongside twinkling atmospherics in ‘Complie’. Throughout the long player are also intricately produced short tracks sitting between the two and three-minute mark such as looping vocal number ‘Dancerecter’, the melodic and rattling ‘Leto’ and ominous ‘Delore’.

Ostanovitsa’ is a murky offering featuring a meandering organ riff, leading into the pitter-patter drums and serene chords of ‘Starveme (feat. Tayut Ogni)’. ‘Come Along’ is a crystalline and otherworldly experience from start to finish, whilst ‘Melting Lights’ is comprised of echoing, subterranean sounds, making way for reverberating snares and metallic stabs in ‘Standalone’.

Husky murmurs and soothing notes then make up ‘Neva’, moving into the syncopated beat and idyllic chord sequences in ‘Can’t Get Enough’ ahead of ‘Stonecold’ and its icy aesthetic. Finally, the album reaches a mesmerising conclusion with the spellbinding ‘Footer’.
