"The sixth release of dsrptv rec, signed by Marcellulose, plunges deep into a dense ocean permeated by Dub Techno. The Penumbra EP is drenched with Noise, Drone Music and Industrial referenceS, reflecting the tense shared moment, without giving up the swing of torn drums, an urban mark of Marcelo's productions. The three original tracks maintain a gloomy atmosphere, translating a feeling of anonymity experienced in the heavy daily city life. The use of the Turkish instrument Saz and a sample of Carlos Marighella's interview on Havana radio stand out as elements that transcend the boundaries of the work. The remix signed by Nog4yra adds a percussive groove to the album, which offers greater potential to the dancefloor. The dsrptv crew takes on the dub environment, colors the album's palette a little with their remix. Rollinos' art surgically synthesizes the atmosphere of the EP through an anonymous mass in B&W, taken from a frame of the film ABC (1990). Finally, art remains strong as a way to face the challenges of our time."

Los Angeles-based ASHRR return with a 100bpm Italo-inspired chugger ‘What’s Been Turning You’ on feat. System Olympia Remixes for their third release on Ralph Lawson’s 20/20 Vision. The record follows single, Fizzy, with a cut taken from their forthcoming album ‘Sunshine Low’ re-interpreted by the band under the guise of their ASHRR Soundsystem alter ego. Driving darker dubs of the main versions, taking the tracks onto club and big room sound systems with arpeggiated synth sequences, tripped out top line melodies, and powerful chunky drums.
 
System Olympia has been forging her unique New Erotica audio-visual experience since 2018 making a name for herself from London to Napoli, Berlin and back. Embodying the spirit of Italian Nu Wave from ‘80s electronic bands like N.O.I.A, Neon and Alexander Robotnick, System Olympia is bringing her own take on slo-mo electro-pop to the table by adding vocals and spectacular synth arrangements to the remixes that will sound as good on headphones as they will in sweaty dark basements.

DJ and producer Art Alfie offers a energetic kraut disco-tinged dance version of Intercellular Communication, a track off of AUTORHYTHM’s 2023 album Songs for the Nervous System. Added vocalisations and sound effects add an eerie vibe not dissimilar to Nurse With Wound’s reworking of Stereolab on Simple Headphone Mind, and a gradual transformation sees elements of the original track taking on Moroder like qualities, before ending in a gloriously pounding Conrad Schnitzler-like groove.

AUTORHYTHM is a music/science/art project by Swedish artist Joakim Forsgren. His unique brand of electronica builds on a dynamic mix of driving rhythms and meditative soundscapes. It is at times suggestive of genres like IDM, techno, New Wave or Krautrock, but always unquestionably an entity of its own. Conceptually the music deals with the inner workings of the human body and how it is affected by frequencies of light and sound. That said, there is an openness and ambiguity to the music that opens it to both micro and macro perspectives, the songs lend themselves equally as well to interplanetary space travel as neurons firing electrical signals along our neural pathways.

One of the most consistent new labels around, Cyphon Recordings, marks double figures with another standout release that gleans from the past but faces the future. This time they look to the talents of Emotive Technology, a new alias from Chilean Massiande who provides a five-track EP of machine-wielding, soul-rousing techno from across the spectrum. Although this may be the first release under his new moniker, Massiande has spent the last decade putting out productions with labels such as Housewax, Phonica, Freerange and Groovin. 
 
Firing on all cylinders from the get-go, ‘Rise’ kicks off the Walk Into The Light EP. A hyperspace melding of new beat, Italo and arp-operating techno that opens out into a slice of peak-time revelry. The swirling textures of ‘It’s On’ follow, pushing you into the next dimension. A hypnotic, entrancing, and arresting heads-down powerhouse. Crunchy and considered it's the kind of strobe-stuttering basement jam that turns heads inside out. Two Detroit-leaning tracks ‘Your Zone’ and ‘Walk Into The Light’ are up next. The former is a heavyweight machine workout. Layered synth lines and crisp drum programming transfix, as that grooving low-end powers bodies into bedlam. The latter, a Motor-City-influenced tour de force. One that sees Massiande recode the circuitry to hit with a piano-laden stunner, balancing power and presence, with emotion and nuance.  Closing out ‘The Swing’ sucks you in deeper. A resonating world of synth stabs, pulsating bass lines and atmospheric electronics.

King of Kings EP is a reminiscence of a period (1980 - 1991), prior to the economic liberalization of India. A closed economy with nearly 200% tariffs or outright bans on all foreign electronic equipment’s including synthesizers, sequencers, drum machines and computers due to west’s antagonizing behavior towards India for not opening its market for foreign colonial corporate actors.

This did not deter musicians to get their hands on the machines despite all the stumbling blocks placed in front of them. Defiance and persistence gave birth to Indian acid and electro synth pop created under our own terms becoming not only father of the machines once we couldn’t own but with our playful ragas giving birth to genres such as acid house.

India thus opened another node in the global cultural flows of electronic music. Cumulatively, this period contributed to the triumph of import substitution in cultural production. An attitude was born to why import when we can make it on our own. A major shift in a mind colonised and slaved for 400 yrs.

This an honest attempt to show the world, how Indian musicians undeterred by barriers made their own mark with western synthesizers and drum machines while staying true to their ethnic identity. A period of Computer Love.

“King of Kings” which translates literally from Tamil (Rajadhi Raja) is a true endeavor to demonstrate to the world how Indian musicians have overcome racial and political boundaries to achieve their sonic mission of expressing our artistic autonomy filled with purpose, perseverance and avant-garde excitement. A musical piece that aims to represent the idea, “In order to become who you are, you need to first overcome who it is they said you are”. A true King of Kings.

From the vibrant streets of Stockholm, Marcus Christiansen is a DJ, producer and creator of the label Club Mackan. Inspired by the synth sounds of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, Marcus has created his own unique sound by blending elements of Italo, EBM, Synthwave and Trance.

With a mission to uplift and spread happiness across the dancefloor, Marcus’s DJ sets weave together playful melodies with driving basslines, groovy disco beats with arpeggiated synthesizers, creating a journey that oscillates between joyous highs and touching depths, surely to leave a smile on everyone's faces.

With multiple releases under his belt, his own imprint Club Mackan and his local club night, Marcus has become a familiar face within the modern italo disco scene. His music is played frequently around the world and has been played in places such as Panorama Bar, HÖR and The Lot Radio. His own ITALO BODY NIGHTS in Stockholm have seen high profile guests such as Kendal, Pablo Bozzi and soon to come Shubostar.

It’s been approximately one year since our first retro futuristic compilation was released, and as we’ve moved further into the future, it appears we’ve come closer to the 90s, if not even ventured a tiny bit into the 00s. We might even be in the present, if not even the future. Somehow, with one foot still in the 80s.

As our universes collide, it’s hard to tell what is what. Whether you think this is a futuristic take on Eurodance with an 80s twist, Italo Body or Trance, that is totally up to you. You might even throw in a few other musical universes too. Is it EBM, Dark Disco or Indie Dance? We don’t know and we don’t judge you for deciding.
