Been a minute.
I started the Flip Sessions series in 2014 as an homage to Jay Dee.
When I put out the Jay Dee Unreleased EP in 1997,
he included an electric piano interlude from a latin jazz album.
I asked him what his intentions were, as the EP was a collection
of remixes that had been fronted on by major labels, and it seemed slightly out of place.
His response was that he wanted to give cats something to make a beat out of. 
The main objective I had with the series is to show the importance of perspective.
There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Volume 7 coincides with the 8th anniversary of SCM.
Per usual the sample is here, it is an open entry event,
and all entries will be added to a master playlist.
The deadline is Saturday Sept 11th.

All entrants must email me their flips to SHOES@STREETCORNERSCM.COM, and post them on soundcloud labeled SCM FLIP SESSIONS 7, also including a link to the soundcloud post in the email.

I will select 2 winners and press their entries to a limited 45.
Winners will receive copies of the 45 as the prize.

Founded in 1967, Moğollar was one of the biggest bands in Turkey during the 70’s. They were among the founders of Anatolian rock with a melodic, psychedelic and blues-influenced sound, and they were also heralded as the kings of Anatolian pop. Their popularity even spread to Europe and earned them many prestigious awards. They worked with countless musicians, ranging from Barış Manço to Selda Bağcan. Even though they took a long hiatus between 1976 and 1992, they are still making music, which puts them among the most active Turkish bands.
Their first and also most famous and influential album, Anadolu Pop, was first released in 1971 in France. 2 years later, it was released in Turkey by Yavuz Plak. An instrumental piece, Haliç’te Güneşin Batışı (Sunset In Golden Horn) is the 7th song off the album. It clearly shows why these guys are called the fathers of Anatolian pop. The band’s unmistakable talent is on full display here; especially Murat Ses’ keyboard solos are very much ahead of the time. 

An ethno driven - progressive song that took place in the “Danses Et Rythmes De La Turquie D'Hier À Aujourd'hui” album which won Académie Charles Cros award (had “Anadolu Pop” name in the Turkey release). Band first released the song on single Ternek / Haliç'te Güneşin Batışı in 1970 under Diskotür label.

3 Hürel was first founded with the name of Yankılar by three brothers, Onur, Haldun and Feridun Hürel. They changed the band’s name to İstanbul Dörtlüsü just because Yankılar was already used by another band. The brothers began their music career with an accordion which their daddy gave them as a promotion gift. In 1967, they founded Oğuzlar and attended Golden Microphone Contest with a song of Zeki Müren. The band, which wore hippie costumes in the concerts, got famous after an interview published on Diskotek magazine. They were also awarded with runner-up prize by Diskotek. They made an instrument named bağlama-guitar which was identified with them. In 1973, they received Golden Record Award by Türk Popu magazine. Sevenler Ağlarmış was released in 1974 on Feridun Hürel’s solo album.

Having notched up over a decade of playing together under various guises, Grupo Magnético are finally ready to release their debut album El Sonido Magnetico on Atenas Del Norte, imprint of acclaimed label Athens of the North.

The Forthcoming LP saw the band performing together with a supporting stella cast of guest singers and musicians from Colombia, New York, Cuba, Venezuela and the UK, who’s credits include playing and recording with legends including the likes of Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and Ray Barretto. 

These live tracks were mixed in New York by acclaimed Grammy award-winning producer Aaron Levinson, who has previously worked with Fania Records, Bio Ritmo, Jimmy Bosch and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. 

Grupo Magnético play heavy salsa with echoes from the golden era of New York and Colombian 70’s salsa.

MIMS is excited to premiere this absolutely luscious soul jam from the Solqlap Budapest collective in collaboration with singer/producer Emmavie. Perfect vibes for this early Autumn.

Seven piece live band/producer/DJ collective, Solqlap Budapest, teams up with one of London’s most exciting rising vocalists and producers, Emmavie, to deliver their brand new single, “Fairy Tale”. This fresh and soulful number is reminiscent of the golden era of neo soul but tinged with the contemporary stylings of future R&B. 

“Fairy Tale” kicks in with no hesitation. Starting with a boom bap groove reminding us of the best of 90’s hip hop, Emmavie soon follows with her beautiful vocals taking us to a magical musical journey. Recorded in one live take and mixed by multi Latin Grammy winner Balazs Robert ‘Gizmoo’ and mastered by multi Grammy and platinum award winner Darcy Proper, Fairy Tale is the first single off a three song EP recorded in Amsterdam’s Wisseloord House Of Music and soon to be released on vinyl via Noord Records.

Solqlap Budapest is a seven piece instrumental hip hop ensemble combining musicians, DJ's and producers from the heart of Hungary. Founded in Budapest in 2010, the group quickly became a significant input of the buzzing local scene. This is thanks to an ongoing series of live performances, organizing events and frequent collaborations with local and international MC's and singers (i.e. Corey James Gray fka iLLspokinn, Emmavie, Sarah-Jane, Wayne Snow, Call Me Unique, Sena, Saiid and more).

Emmavie is a singer/songwriter and producer. She specialises in what she describes as "limitless soulful future R&B". Her music is an amalgamation of 90s R&B and her love for digital audio experimentation.
