*recorded live in Toronto at our Off-Pride lake rave (06/25/22)

This b2b was meant to be, yet very nearly wasn’t. Sanjeet, who provided two unforgettable Best in Town performances in summer 2021, was again scheduled for peak time at our lake rave this summer. D-Grade was in Toronto for the weekend but was busy with a different gig the same night as our party. When the two ran into each other a few days before this event, they recognized each other from Sustain-Release a few years prior and lamented the scheduling overlap. Too bad. 

Then the moon had its say: Sanjeet dreamt of their b2b, D-Grade’s gig fell through, and after about an hour of prep, the two made their way to the far-out location and told us about a slight mod to the lineup. As soon as they hit the decks it was clear we were in for something special. A cohesive propulsion shone through the speakers, carrying us from the cavernous night to the first tinge of day.

"This mix was a re-creation of a set I did at the Stream Informer Glen Falls House party this past June. I recorded the live set and was hoping to release that, but I was redlining a little too hard, and the recording came out hopelessly distorted. I was really proud of the mix and put a lot of work into it, so 3 months after the fact I decided to revisit it.

In preparing the set initially I decided to pretend I was playing to the sunrise even though the set ended at 4AM. Sunrise for me means… trance, I guess. It was a really cute party and lots of friends (Alyce included!) were there providing tons of warm and wiggly energy. I remember looking out and seeing someone twerking on the subwoofer at one point. My summer was kind of up and down after that, so it was a really positive memory to revisit.

I did this incarnation of the mix in my living room with 2 old CDJ 2000s, one XDJ 700 that I borrowed from my friend Danny, and my Mastersound 4 rotary mixer. I spent one day practicing, then did two full takes over the next two evenings. The take you’re hearing right now was the last one that I recorded. Looking back at the tracklist, one thing that stands out is how much new music I played, which is pretty rare for me. You’re not usually gonna see this much music from 2020 and beyond in a Tony G tracklist."

About the mix:

"I had toured for the first time in Australia late 2018 and it made a massive impression on me. In many ways, it reminded me of a warmer version of Canada. People were incredibly kind and welcoming and I was blown away by the hospitality the promoters and local artists showed me. I also absolutely adored the incredible nature I saw in Australia, having played in Hobart and Brisbane and Melbourne and Sydney and Adelaide and Hopkins’ Creek Festival in a volcanic crater, I fell in love with the landscapes I saw and the animals local only to this part of the world. So when I first sat down to think about this mix, the bushfires had just started raging and the news was beyond depressing to see. Everywhere I saw online was just videos and pictures of burned animals and ash that was once blooming flora & fauna. A fan from Australia sent me a DM on IG, telling me how my song “Terracotta”, as it’s a track that talks about the sea and land, was able to give them a lot of peace during a time that was anything but.

And so I decided I wanted to make a mix that not only paid tribute to this incredible music scene and country and its amazing artists, but was musically able to provide a sense of solace to people who perhaps feel hopeless about our time on this planet. That is partly why I began the mix with music by indigenous tribes from East Timor—as “modern” people it’s sad to see that we’ve lost touch with the roots of our life on this planet as we know it, and I think we have so much to learn from indigenous cultures and their respect for mother nature. I also chose a lot of dub music, and music that featured lots of organic drums for similar reasons, as these styles of music owe as much to indigenous folk music as they do to modern electronic music. Ultimately I wanted the mix to feel like slipping into a warm bath. Hope it was successful. 🙂"

Alright alright, here we are with another installment of Live and Direct after a few months off. Our first recording for 2020 comes from a memorable night last November when our resident Aurora Halal invited Pessimist in to share the booth. 

Aurora provided the opening (and closing) moments, which is a side of the beloved techno we are really enjoying getting to know. Known for her meticulously programmed sets that build with both patience and intensity, this opening stays true to her hypnotic style. Taking us from cinematic dub techno to pitched up club favorites and back again, it's a subterranean and psychedelic ride leading us to the surface just before Pessimist's dnb stylings took over for the night.

Aurora is back in our booth on March 28 alongside Wata Igarashi, DJ Python, Juliana Huxtable and more for Nowadays Nonstop. Tickets for that are available on Resident Advisor now.
