Voiced by Hilda Toubatla of the Mahotella Queens, ‘Hleziphi’ was one of Malombos’ most well-loved tunes in South Africa, where it gained the title of ‘the magical Hleziphi’ after appearing on the 1967 Malombo Jazz Makers Vol. 2 LP. The lyrics call to a girl, Hleziphi, to come home - ‘Come Hleziphi, bring the cows home to the kraal, it will rain soon’ and the song featured on the programme of the Into the Heart of Negritude show.

When Aim’s Cold Water Music dropped in 1999 on cult Manchester label Grand Central Records, it was an underground sensation. Preceded by a string of well received 12”s and EP’s the album was eagerly anticipated and Aim delivered in a big way, elevating his trademark sound to new heights with a collection of uplifting cinematic soundscapes, dark jazz fuelled breaks and hard hitting hip-hop beats (featuring guest rap legends QNC, AG and YZ). Uniquely, there was a sense of nostalgic sentimentality running through the record and the whole thing was underpinned by a musicality often missing in sample based production.

Pushed on by organic, word-of-mouth promotion and the success of the Aim Live band that sold out Shepherds Bush Empire and smashed Glastonbury’s Jazz World stage in 2007, Cold Water Music went on to shift over 100,000 units and is now seen as a ground-breaking, genre defining UK classic that has inspired legions of bedroom beat-makers.

The original vinyl pressing sold out within weeks of it’s release making it a sought after collectors piece with rocketing Ebay prices for clean copies. After years of fan requests, both ATIC and Aim felt the time was right to finally repress the wax. Says Andy Turner (Aim), “Rather than just repress the original album, we remastered and recut it from scratch using the original DAT master tapes.”

Every now and then an album comes along that both resonates and endures. An album that stays with those first to hear it and one that is discovered and treasured by generations to follow. Seventeen years on from it’s initial release Cold Water Music sounds as fresh, as inventive and as necessary as it ever did.

The hero's journey continues. Having left behind your mundane reality in Monomyth: Separation. ‘Initiation’ will take you deep into the unknown, the underworld, the intangible. 

Part 2 of the Monomyth trilogy will take you on a road of trials. This is a favorite phase of the myth- adventure. 

Frenic has created a concept album in the Trip Hop tradition taking influence from a wide selection of source material that includes Hip Hop, Dub, Soul, Funk and Folk. This has all been crafted together using deep beats, scratches, huge dark reverbs and saturated lo fi sounds. 

Based on the book “A Hero with a Thousand Faces”. By Joseph Campbell the trilogy seeks to engage with the concept that all stories have one common theme and by understanding this your own hero's journey can be enlightened. 

“Whether we listen with aloof amusement to the dreamlike mumbo jumbo of some red-eyed witch doctor of the Congo, or read with cultivated rapture thin translations from the sonnets of the mystic Lao-tse; now and again crack the hard nutshell of an argument of Aquinas, or catch suddenly the shining meaning of a bizarre Eskimo fairy tale: it will be always the one, shape-shifting yet marvelously constant story that we find, together with a challengingly persistent suggestion of more remaining to be experienced than will ever be known or told.”(Joseph Campbell)

Pour le 1er novembre, on voulait une carte blanche spéciale, parce qu’on aime bien marquer le coup de des jours fériés. Et puis parce que, mine de rien, la fête des Morts, c’est important en musique, ça fait énormément de gens à se souvenir. Alors, on a pensé à quelqu’un qui synthétisait à sa manière tous les sons d’aujourd’hui, d’hier et de demain qui passaient sur Le Grigri. Car le pseudonyme de ce quelqu’un veut dire beaucoup: en choisissant de se cacher derrière l’alias https://soundcloud.com/free-the-robots, Chris Alfaro voulait montrer que les machines avaient elle aussi beaucoup à dire question liberté. Il faut dire que le garçon a été l’un des membres-clés des fameuses soirées Low End Theory à Los Angeles qui ont participé à brouiller les pistes entre électro, jazz, beatmaking et hip-hop. Tel Flying Lotus, Mndsgn ou Knxwledge, ce Californien expérimente à gogo et à foison aux côtés de Lefto ou d’Opio de Souls of Mischief. Prévu pour le 7 novembre, son prochain album divague sur les rythmes tribaux avec classe et nourrit déjà les ondes du Grigri. Bref un type à suivre de très près qu’on est heureux d’accueillir dans la grande famille des Cartes Blanches.
