If you know Karen O primarily as the lead singer for indie rock mainstays The Yeah Yeah Yeahs then you may be taken by surprise on Lux Prima, her new collaboration with producer/multi-instrumentalist Danger Mouse. From the opening McCartney-esque montage and throughout 9 extremely vibe heavy tracks, it’s a new but oddly perfect experience to hear her voice wrapped  in the downtempo futuristic funk arrangements he excelled at with the band Gnarls Barkley.

While most of the materials hangs in this lush laidback afterhours atmosphere, it’s a relief to hear some of the punk rock pyrotechnics that made Karen O’s voice one of the most recognizable in indie rock such as broken speaker yelps that power foot-stomping single “Woman”. 

Over the past few years both artists have made a habit of collaborating with acts from all over the stylistic map. It seems like this experience has given them confidence to follow a song in any direction while still retaining a cohesive feel throughout even on 60s throwbacks like “Redeemer”.
