'Bathers at La Grenouillere' is the second in a set of seven pieces collectively titled 'I would like to paint as the bird sings' based on paintings by the French impressionist painter, Claude Monet.

"Alas! Once again I will not appear there [at the Salon], since I have nothing finished. I do have a dream, a tableau of the bathers at La Grenouillere. Renoir, who has just spent a couple months here, has already attempted it ..." (Monet)

The pianist is Jeanell Carrigan.

Dr Jeanell Carrigan is presently an Associate Professor in Collaborative Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and throughout Australia, and has recorded for the Bavarian Radio Corporation, the ABC and for regional stations in Australia on many occasions. She holds a Doctor of Creative Arts in the area of Australian post-1970 solo piano repertoire and in May, 2016 released her seventeenth solo compact disc of Australian piano music. She is passionate about promoting Australian Music particularly the piano music of Australian women composers. In a review of the CD A Little Variation, composer Houston Dunleavy said “This recording is one to add to the list of treasures of Australian music that seem to be growing by the year. Surely Jeanell Carrigan belongs in this category as well. Australian music has a great champion in Carrigan’s fine playing and scholarship. She deserves far wide recognition for the quality of her work.” (Music Trust 1/4/15)

Bathers at La Grenouillere (piano solo)

'Camille' is the third piece in a set of seven pieces collectively titled 'I would like to paint as the bird sings' based on paintings by the French impressionist painter, Claude Monet.

Camille-Léonie Doncieux was born in the town of La Guillotiere, now part of Lyons, France,  on 15 January 1847. Her father, Charles Claude Doncieux, was a merchant. He moved with his wife and daughter to Paris, near the Sorbonne early in the Second French Empire (1852-1870). A few years after the birth of her sister, Geneviève-François in 1857, the family moved to Batignolles, now a part of the northwestern section of Paris. Batignolles was popular with artists.

While in her teens, Doncieux began work as a model. She met Monet, seven years her senior, in 1865 and became his model posing for numerous paintings. She was Monet's mistress, living in poverty at the beginning of his career. His aunt and father did not approve of the relationship with Camille. During Camille's pregnancy with their first son, Monet left her in Paris and stayed at his aunt's country estate to protect the monthly cheque that he received from the family and give the appearance that he was no longer in a relationship with Camille. She was left behind in Paris without funds for her care.

'Poppy Fields' is the final piece in a set of seven pieces collectively titled 'I would like to paint as the bird sings' based on paintings by the French Impressionist painter, Claude Monet.

"For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life - the light and the air which vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value."
