Solo Tracks: Bev Whelan

Seamus Heaney was inspired by this traditional slow air to write his wonderful poem The Given Note. So the story goes, a fiddler went alone to Inis Mhic Aoibhleáin  in the Blasket Islands, and inspired by whale song out at sea came back with this tune. 

I recorded this a number a years ago, and it remains my favourite slow air to play.

Port na bPucai

An instrumental Irish slow air, a song of exile, written by Pádraig Ó Miléadha in the early 20th Century. The title means 'The bright mountain of Cua'. This tune contains all the longing for home that the composer felt, while working far away from Co. Waterford in the Welsh coal mines.

I learned this tune from the playing of Matt Cranitch, and I am playing it on my John Sindt D whistle.

Monaghan Jig

A traditional slow air, which laments the loss of a boat that sank with all  in the Corrib river, Co. Galway, in 1828.

I'm playing this on my antique 'simple system' wooden flute, which was made c1840 in London by B.  Lee of Old Bond Street.

I’ve really enjoyed writing new music inspired by sleep & dreaming as part of The Moon Project album (led by Jessica Henderson of Arrow to the Knee Productions), a collaborative album by women composers across Scotland!

I was particularly inspired by REMS science and wanted to create a lush, orchestral, dreamy soundscape as an exploration of new sounds for sleep – and it was a glorious chance to once again work with the wonderful Emma Donald on violin too.

Supported by Creative Scotland’s Inclusion Fund, The Moon Project brings together six female composers from Scotland to produce a 9 track album – Jessica Henderson, Joanna Gill, Andrea Possee, Emily Frances Ippolito, Caragh, and Luci Holland.
