Beyond The Struttosphere - IN DARK WE TRUST #192

Beyond The Struttopshere is a sonic collaboration between Leo Strutt (Strutt Bros DJs) and Ben Chetwood (Flying Mojito Bros, Damian Lazarus’s Ancient Moons) aimed at channelling their considerable musical production experience and boundless love of cosmic chugging dark disco. Their debut EP, New Frontier, was released on Gouranga in late 2020 and featured remixes from heavyweights of the scene: James Rod, Mufti and K-Effect. The title track found much acclaim among Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston’s A Love From Outer Space online fraternity and was featured in The Juan Mclean’s (DFA Records) contribution to Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space mix series. In 2021, the boys released their second EP, ‘Celestial Drift’, on Mélopée Records with Mexican dark disco wizard Roliva delivering a stellar remix. They then featured on Mélopée’s inaugural VA compilation, with the ZZ Top inspired ‘Pontiac Firebird’, and later that year performed remix duties for hybrid alien rock trailblazers, aka The Menzia, on Ilya Santana’s comic disco imprint (Astrolead Recordings). 

Their now trademark sound combines fat chugging basslines with reverbed guitar riffs, 80s-tinged cosmic synths, crunchy power cords, gnarly arpeggiators, spacey 303s, Italo drum fills, and swirling psychedelic delay lines. The boys have a busy year ahead with another hotly anticipated release on Gouranga, now their flagship label, as well as guest mixes on IN DARK WE TRUST, Counterterraism and Heartwood FM. This summer you can catch them DJ’ing at Glastonbury’s infamous Rabbit Hole, Noisily, Secret Garden Party and Heartwood Festival. Beyond The Struttosphere return to Gouranga in full force, two years following the release of their lauded debut EP, New Frontier. The title track of Astral Riders imagines the two cosmonauts burning through the atmosphere to a soundtrack of chugging metallic guitar stabs, syncopated arpeggiators and celestial 808 hits, coupled with an extraterrestrial vocal sample from the 1969 cult biker film, Easy Rider. The track builds in momentum, before propelling into cloud nine with a fully tranced-out crescendo. Remix duties are provided by two maestros of the scene: Mexican dark wave legend Rigopolar applies his signature formula to the original, stripping it back to its core components, and bolstering it with cosmic synths, driving motorik percussion and a Donna Summer style bassline that ramps up the groove. Israeli house aficionado Juvë delivers a second remix that draws on elements of deep house and comes loaded with distorted FX, ethereal pads and reverberating low-end synths that culminate in a spectacular drop. 

The second offering, Canyon Grit, is as gnarly and raw as its name suggests: this is full throttle dancefloor banger, commanded by a dynamic resonant chug bassline, reinforced with cutting snares, driving hi-hats, reverbed guitar loops, and Hendrix-inspired psychedelic 303 sequences that will leave you gasping for air. The original is backed by a stellar remix from Tiempo De Maldad, another Mexican stalwart, whose take cruises through hyperspace in unfaltering abandon, with kinetic drum workouts and spacey synths that navigate the tune to its tripped-out conclusion. 

The final track, Set Lasers To Stun, comes laden with intoxicating solo guitar recorded live on a vintage Stratocaster, deployed with euphoric Rhodes piano, galactic laser zaps, twanging new wave guitar chords, and the BTS trademark chug bassline. The EP closes with a remix from Rebolledo, head honcho of Burning Man’s Mayan Warrior and one half of the legendary Pachanga Boys. His contribution remodels the track into a dark and hypnotic desert trip, with dusty FX and dreamlike melodic pads that will no doubt teleport dancefloors into the stratosphere.

Beyond The Struttosphere is a sonic collaboration between two London-based DJs combining their considerable musical production experience with an insatiable passion for cosmic chugging dark disco.

The cosmonauts embark on their most ambitious journey yet with the release of ‘Odyssey-10’ on Emerald & Doreen records. True to its name, the lead track evokes an epic space voyage propelled by driving arpeggiators, chunky layered percussion, high-octane guitar hits and the signature BTS chug bassline.

The tune progresses into a tectonic breakdown heightened by
spacey Juno chords before launching into a dynamite crescendo that burns contrails through the atmosphere.

Remixes are provided by two bastions of the scene: Mexican dark wave star
Vongold introduces lustful celestial vocals into the mix, dialling down the tempo, and repurposing the track into a post-punk acid chugger that takes no prisoners. French dark disco connoisseur Badknife applies his masterful touch with a second remix, cranking up the throb and deploying interstellar synth arrangements that will have you reaching for your seatbelt.

The duo venture into uncharted territory with ‘Satellite Cities’, a collaboration with cosmic queen Miss Zagato. Undoubtedly their funkiest production to date, this galactic chugger is a hypnotic blend of funky guitar plucks, electrifying stabs and groovy riffs, underpinned by Miss Zagato’s intoxicating lyrics that transport you to the moon in a hypersonic X-15. Building in momentum and complexity, the track climaxes with a mesmerising vocal chorus, elevated by cosmic synth melodies and a resonating mid-range bass that will echo for aeons to come.

The original is backed by a sublime remix from Spanish electronic virtuoso, Ivan Fabra, whose take re-imagines the track as a pulsating Balearic dancefloor anthem loaded with powerful drums and ethereal pads that melt into the sunset.

The EP concludes with ‘Storming Heaven’, a sonically charged acid trip that adventures through the cosmos, guided by a weighty chugging bass, a psychedelic 303 line, tripped out guitar chords and an array of cosmic FX. The tune traverses two mystical breakdowns before ascending into stratospheric planes with a euphoric synth sequence and a staggering guitar solo courtesy of long-time BTS collaborator Stannard Procedure. Beyond The Struttosphere blast back into orbit with the release of ‘Planet Ogo’ on Discolypso. The title track is inspired by progressive trance and fuses a driving chug bassline with a hypnotic 303 sequence, distorted techno stabs and a trifecta of meandering arpeggiators, creating a wormhole through space and time. Thunderous power chords and nuanced percussion layering guide the track towards a cosmic void, echoing with mind-bending vocal samples from the cult sci-fi film ’12 Monkeys’, before a high-voltage crescendo transports you to the Planet Ogo. Remixes are provided by two masters of the scene: South Korean cosmic disco royalty, Shubostar, applies her trademark sound, introducing playful melodies, kinetic arps and retro-futuristic synths that elevate its seismic breakdown into outer space. Spanish new wave maestro, K-Effect, provides a more psychedelic contribution, weaving in tripped-out FX, clinical drum arrangements and low-end synths that propel the tune towards its ominous conclusion.
 
‘Cosmic Stuntman’, the second offering, is as intrepid as its name suggests. The first half is a minimalist soundscape defined by crunchy guitar riffs, energetic tambourines, cowbells and an array of spacey FX, before the second opens in throttle with a ferocious mid-range bass, cutting snares and cosmic pads that build in magnitude as the track reaches its spellbinding climax. Dionigi, alumnus of Italian cosmic sound movement, remixes the track into a low-slung chugger complete with glitchy vocoders that resemble scrambled UFO transmissions.
 
The EP concludes with bonus remixes of BTS back catalogue hits. ‘Replicants’, originally released on Mélopée Records in 2021, is resurrected by Berlin-based electronic rock n’ roll band, Tegel Boys, who transform the track into a krautrock-infused kosmiche space odyssey perfect for tuned-in psychic travellers. Mexican dark wave legend, Rigopolar, follows with a tranced-out remix bolstered by robotic arpeggiators and mechanical guitars that propel you to Mach-10. Completing the package are reinterpretations of ‘Storming Heaven’ which first appeared on Emerald & Doreen Recordings and pays homage to Jay Steven’s eponymous book on LSD and the American dream. Argentinian dark disco producer and member of Ralph Lawson’s 2020 Soundsystem, Julian Sanza, cranks up the funk and reconfigures the track into a Balearic sunset trip. UK godfather of chug Rich Lane isolates the original’s soaring guitar solo and reimagines the track into a mesmerising downtempo chugger tinged with psychedelia.

BIO:
Beyond The Struttopshere is a sonic collaboration between two DJs channelling their considerable musical production experience and boundless love of cosmic chugging dark disco. Their debut EP ‘New Frontier’ was released on Discolypso Recordings in 2020 and found much acclaim among Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston’s A Love From Outer Space online fraternity, also appearing on Juan Mclean’s (DFA Records) contribution to Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space mix series. This propelled the duo to new heights, leading to highly lauded releases on esteemed labels such as Mélopée Records, Astrolead Recordings, Discolypso, In Dark We Trust, Emerald & Doreen and X-PRESSINGS, and DJ gigs at Glastonbury’s Rabbit Hole, Secret Garden Party, Noisily Festival and Berlin’s infamous KitKat Club among many others. Beyond The Struttosphere’s music is now making sonic reverberations around the globe, hitting the dancefloors of Burning Man, House of Yes NYC, ADE, Fusion Festival, Sisyphos Berlin, and notching up remixes from notable legends of the scene including Shubostar, Rebolledo, Rigopolar, Tegel Boys, Vongold, Badknife, James Rod, Julian Sanza, Roliva, K-Effect and Mufti. The cosmonauts are frequently immersed in the studio, with live guitar now a mainstay of their productions. Their trademark sound combines fat chugging basslines with reverbed guitar riffs, syncopated arpeggiators, cosmic synths, vintage vocal samples, Italo drum fills and psychedelic 303 sequences.
