Since 2006, the Deep Heet series of recordings has shown the public an especially distinctive side of the production work of Planetary Assault Systems. With a unique ‘engine room’ ambience and a focus upon maintaining a continual surge of pure energy, each volume in the Deep Heet collection has lived up to that title, subtly suggesting the kind of sustained and voluntary temperature rise that has traditionally given way to spiritual or visionary experiences. Just check out tracks such as “Flat Tire” from Volume 3, with its hard percussive edge accompanied by a pervasive hiss like boiling matter changing into gas. P.A.S. helmsman Luke Slater also thinks highly enough of this series to re-work tracks like “Whistle Viper” in recent live sets, or to offer up others (e.g. “Raid”) for remixing by Mote-Evolver allies.

It’s only appropriate, then, that the 50th overall release on Mote-Evolver should also be the fourth overall volume of Deep Heet. In keeping with Slater’s recent forward-thinking self-assessments like the “Planetary Funk” anniversary series, this is simultaneously a summary of past successes and another new evolution in style and content. This new set of four highly concentrated cuts shows how effective Planetary Assault Systems can be at fueling the imagination by fusing together rhythmic and incidental elements into a unified, animated meshwork, without even a prominent melody to help out. For example, on the compelling track “Lazer Organical,” listeners will find themselves in the midst of a testing range where thick arcs of coherent plasma ricochet off of the walls.

Deep Heet Vol. 4 also showcases Slater’s aptitude for choosing just the right moments to deviate from a steady groove: on the mesmerizing bubblebath of “Random Kingdom,” he allows listeners to sink into the rising sonic foam before interjecting with some sharp metallic hits. The leadoff track “Desert Races” proceeds in similar fashion, weaving a web of luminous sequencer patterns around the listener before and cutting in with sudden fluctuations or distortions that function like a hypnotist’s suggestions after an entranced patient has become fully responsive. “Life Rhythm,” on the other hand, is a total immersion session in which Slater’s presence seems to recede into the background and listeners themselves may begin imagining overtones and sonic ephemera that weren’t programmed into the original track.

Hot on the heels of his noteworthy digital debut for Mark Broom’s Beard Man label earlier this year, rising Brighton-based techno producer Rene Wise steps up on Mote Evolver with his second instalment, ‘Loud Colours’ EP. True to the DNA of Luke Slater’s imprint, Wise fires off a throbbing combination of big room-ready 4/4 mechanics, high-velocity bass and hypnotic acideries on a dopey, dubby flex – engineering the tools of chaos for a highly immersive dive into the basement’s teeming underworld and its nocturnal fauna. 

The howling ‘Wolf’ kicks things off on a pounding yet playful note with its hooting synths and behemoth kicks, whilst ‘Broken Motor’ sinks you into an obsessive swirl of lysergic arpeggios and rattling drums on automatic fire. Back to a more synthetic feel, ‘Loud Colours’ heads for the abysses of consciousness with its subtly interwoven skein of sonar-like bleeps, bloops and straight gut-churning stomp. Looping the loop, ‘Spirit Molecule’ tops the record off with more of a hip-swaying finish, dipping its latin-inflected batucada riddims in a thick sauce of brooding dub, eerie noises and altered vocal echoes out the murkiest of post-urban landscapes.

Across a carefully arranged course, the album naturally unravels its many ideas, ranging from moments of pensive ambient pieces to thick washes of dub echo and layers of modulated synths, all while providing an endless array of hypnotizing bare-bone grooves in the process.

A true Figure mainstay, Jeroen Search upholds his artistic relevancy without any reinventing or switching up the formula – rather by simply keeping true to his accomplished craft.

Already an established artist since his early minimal and dubbed-out techno productions around the beginning of the millenium, recently re-emerged Exos is now picking up the thread. Building on his strengths also on his first EP on Figure, the icelandic beatsmith carefully hones his sensibly arranged and richly layered tracks, which then are detached to play about for the pure pleasure of following their constant evolution. 
This is intense listening – we are treated to a dive in the deep end of techno and may only come up again with more clarity and focus, simply from having been lost in the groove for what felt like a moment outside of time.

Joining forces for the first time are label founder Len Faki and Juxta Position, a rather fresh yet already integral member of Figure. How effectively the prolific producers worked them machines with combined strength shows in every fiber of this four-tracker.

The record‘s sides feature two alternate mixes of each track: Superstition tempts with is sultry vocal, driven by an irresistible acidic groove, fusing Juxta Position’s preference for rough and analogue sounds with the tight programming Len Faki has become renowned for. Paying tribute to UK’s gritty brand of warehouse-techno, A2 introduces a more swinging and all-out version of the track.

A lot more tender than its counterpart, Gathering Clouds slowly builds from jagged synths and droning basses, brewing up a vivid tempest of anticipation. Verging carefully on the moment of emotional release, we are left to imagine the theatrical scenery cooked up in this delicious blend of the two artists’ singular skills.

Introducing the Belgian musician Peter Adriaenssens, better known to most as 6SISS. A returning New Beat veteran who started releasing 6SISS material in 2013. The 6SISS guise is a homage to his six sisters.  While not easy to label, Peter’s musical style could ( perhaps not entirely fairly ) be categorised as glitch/IDM by way of industrial/techno. There is a strong obsession with rhythmic structure, which manifests in intricate and dynamic patterns covered in a persistent layer of grain and overarching synth-based atmospheres. Everything is masterfully tied together through the subtle use of sampling and a clever approach to composition. 
6SISS plays the type of music that is always in danger of crossing into the unfortunate area of well-meaning frivolous baroque. British DJ and producer Inland (Ed Davenport) has compiled and mixed ‘Stream State’, his biggest project to date, bringing together over 20 artists in a DJ-ready compilation of colourful, diverse modern techno on his label Counterchange.

Complete with a 90 minute continuous mix by Inland himself, the project celebrates over 15 years behind the decks and cements Davenport’s reputation not only as a tireless force in the studio, but as a trusted selector and curator of contemporary club music. Spanning deep idm-rooted studies, lush chord-driven euphoria, powerful modernist workouts and tough house-groove jackers, Davenport weaves an addictive mix full of character and his precision mixing style.

From veterans and heroes like DJ Skull, Efdemin, Joel Mull, Boddika, Peter Van Hoesen, and Mark Broom (alongside Discrete Circuit), to a new echelon of up-and-coming talent like Rhyw, Sophia Saze, Jamaica Suk, Johanna Knutsson, Aiken, DJ Sodeyama, Perm and Felix Fleer, there’s an underlying thread of shimmering production values and close attention to detail in every track. Inland also selected debuts from Berlin based artists Fred Mann and Arbitrage, and welcomes back BNJMN, P. Lopez and Distant Echoes to the label, now in its 7th year of operation.

‘Stream State’ is Inland’s celebration of the DJ mix / compilation format. Enamoured with UK dance music culture in the mid 90s, the burning, illicit energy of early rave mixtapes left a huge impression. Mystical bootlegs recorded at mass gatherings in fields or late night Radio One transmissions captured on cassette – their eternal spirit was absorbed and cherished. Now more than 2 decades later, Davenport has channeled that fascination into this weighty collector’s item and a captivating continuous mix.

All 22 tracks included are new and original productions made by some of Inland’s favourite artists and colleagues. A network and a community – complied and presented by an artist who continues to demonstrate his longevity and unique voice in the scene.

In 2020 Inland will play a series of ‘Stream State’ events hosting a selection of the artists involved at celebrated venues around the world. The first announced dates are to be held at IFZ in Leipzig, The Block in Tel Aviv, FOLD in London, ://about blank in Berlin, Nitsa in Barcelona, Vurt in Seoul, Gare in Porto and a pre-release event at Spacehall record store, Berlin.

Arch was born in 2020 when a strange and invisible beast issued from the depths and caught us all off-guard. The antidote for three electronic-music-lifers in Berlin was to create a series of carefully curated live concerts, an exercise in the new and bizarre language of socially distanced happenings. 

Great joy was to be found amidst those challenging months. Boundaries were crossed, expectations exceeded, and a wave of new music came into existence as the artists on stage adapted and opened up to nutritiously rich, meditative zones. Hybrid strains of experimental, avant-garde, IDM, electro-acoustic and post-club ambience were witnessed and enjoyed responsibly. 

Three sold out concerts later, we find 2020 drawing to a close with ‘Life on Small Planets,’ a 10 track curated album featuring many of the artists who performed at arch. 

Featuring Amandra, Fred Mann, Inland & John Gürtler, Jamaica Suk, Johanna Knutsson, Kev Sheridan, Magna Pia, Mathias Schober, Merrin Karras and Perm & HAL, ‘Life on Small Planets’ is a refreshing reminder of the power and importance of contemporary (electronic) music.

Meyer Bergy - one of Eastern Europe's most unique and innovative artists. Known for his distinctive take on raw techno, Meyer has a rich history of releasing vinyl records and has headlined iconic clubs in Berlin under his previous alias, Oleg Mass. 
A notable highlight of his career includes collaborating with the legendary Mike Dehnert on Fachwerk. Recently, Meyer has evolved his sound, embracing the Melodic Techno genre, which has captured the attention of prominent artists such as Argy, Solomun and Yulia Niko.
