Plasma Sources is proud to present nosync’s Soundsystem Music, an EP which provides a fresh perspective on the high-fidelity and sci-fi influenced electronic music the imprint is known for.  

nosync’s (https://soundcloud.com/user-775234683) work sits in a truly unique space in the sound system/club music-o-sphere. This in large part is due to his heavy deployment of progressive metal instrumentation, from chugging walls of overdriven guitars to relentless double-time kick patterns. On paper, utilising this palette in a club-music context may seem like an impossible task. However, where others might see a chasm of disparity, nosync has deftly identified the bridge connecting these two genres, seeing in these two landscapes the same desired emotional state - despite the different methodologies used to achieve this.  

“This record attempts to make the case that the essence of what makes these sounds so obsessively loved are one and the same. Gripping dramatism and intensity are the overlapping themes that I have attempted to bring out here, through the record’s sound design and film-like structure.” 

Indeed Soundsystem Music as a whole feels wildly cinematic and is as much an exercise in atmosphere creation as music for sound systems, with nosync citing the video game Dead Space and its sequel as key influences for this body of work. From the claustrophobic, elasticated wind chamber of ‘Traced’ to the broken choir voices and FiS-esque ambient abyss of ‘Dead Land’, nosync has expertly matched the pace and atmosphere of these hugely iconic and utterly terrifying video games and channeled them into a purely sonic experience.  

The metal influences nosync brings to the table slice through the entire corpus of Soundsystem Music, although the linkage is perhaps at its most clear on ‘Airlock’, which features a full-on death-metal guitar chugging through the first half. In perhaps the most surprising switch-up of the entire EP, things suddenly twist into a guttural underwater club track a third of the way through.  

nosync’s love for the vast ecosystem of club/soundsystem music also comes through loud and clear on this release, from the grime-inflected leads and hyper-detailed polyrhythmic noise workouts of ‘Unregistered Hypercam’ to the reverberated metal clangs of ‘Kauket’s Arena’ which feels like witch-house on steroids - the soundtrack to some final boss battle with some type of nightmare-demon-entity.  

nosync has achieved something unique with Soundsystem Music. By drawing together a hugely disparate corpus of influences and pummelling them into a noise-fuelled apocalyptic aberration, he has created a sound which feels consistent, fully his own, and in many places, utterly dread-inducing.

unearth - Aberrations

Exodus delves into the odyssey of the Dove family as they journey from Bryan, Texas to the vibrant landscapes of Los Angeles in the 1960s. In Nexcyia’s quest to
encapsulate the dystopian surrealism of the Dove family's journey, he aims to harnesse the power of sound as a potent tool of storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the
decaying landscapes and moving atmospheres that surrounded them, he crafted a sonic tapestry that transcended traditional music composition, immersing listeners
in a visceral experience of their journey.
Nexcyia's approach to sound design is meticulous and reflective, as he seeks to manipulate and distort familiar elements into something altogether otherworldly. He
samples the haunting echoes of lost voices weaving them into the fabric of his compositions to evoke the desolation and decay of the world around them. The subtle
but metallic clang of rusted objects are granulized, while the distant hum of malfunctioning electronics formed a dissonant melody that lingered in the subconscious
like a half-remembered dreams.
Nexcyia seeks to infuse his compositions with a sense of hope and resilience, drawing on the indomitable spirit of the Dove family as they navigated through the
dystopian wasteland. Amidst the cacophony of chaos and despair, he introduces moments of ethereal beauty, incorporating haunting melodies and soaring harmonies
that pierced through the darkness like shafts of light breaking through storm clouds.
Through sound, Nexcyia transformed the Dove family's odyssey into an immersive auditory experience, blurring the lines between music and storytelling. Each
composition is a journey in itself, an afro-sonic tapestry that can transport listeners into the heart of a multiverse. And in doing so, he not only captures the essence of
their journey but also invited listeners to embark on their own odyssey of discovery and transformation.

Wave Drop

After a five-year hiatus, Isaka returns with ‘Elytra’, a work exploring the increasingly blurred lines between organic and artificial realities. In her self-defined 'hyperbass', 'Elytra' blends low-end grit with a melodic pop sheen, morphing erratic rhythms, intricate sound design and hyperpop vocals that balance formal sensibilities and visceral club energy. 
Isaka underwent the transformative experience of medical transition during her move to Berlin and this radical change emerges in the thematic exploration of Elytra. 
Isaka uses insect moulting as a metaphor for the cyclical, often traumatic process of metamorphosis and the EP’s exploration of adaptation and articulation where skin is not only a boundary of the self, but also the interface for our surroundings. 
Themes of evolving identity are woven not only into the music but also into the visual art, zine & custom website accompanying the release. A different character represents each of the tracks, brought to life through a deep iterative process involving collages, sketches, and an array of AI-assisted 3D imagery. Limited-edition electronic sculptures will also be produced for ‘Elytra’.

Tracks in focus

Bubbly textures and frenzied drum cuts move side-by-side with NPC inspired vocal chops in opening track Slang Overload. Made in collaboration with TRYCE over an intense three-day session in 2023, it’s a nod towards glitch-hop revival with elements of UK Bass, packed with meticulously sculpted and destroyed sounds.

In Circuit Shaker we enter metallic low-end stepper territory: celestial tripped-out highs and a driving low end. We are cohabiting with lesbian androids at a picnic. With its off-kilter grooves and tender strangeness, Circuit Shaker embodies the inherent weirdness of intimacy—the paradoxical freedom of losing yourself when the boundaries blur between who's wearing who. The track, which first began in 2018, is a footwork, house, and electro-inspired tune which transitions between two sections at 120 and 160 BPM through polyrhythmic syncopation.

Isaka and Enayet combine for the third track, NYC 2016, a wigged-out hard hitter where drums are the main character. NYC 2016 is the ultimate DJ tool—a sonic exoskeleton whose essence straddles alienation and empowerment. Forged through countless late-night sessions with Enayet between 2016 and 2017, this track embodies the raw energy of a city’s underground dance scene where jackhammer kicks and clattering snares assault the senses. 

7Qubit explores dehumanization through platform capitalism and is alive with bugs and the quirks of  the obsessive virtualisation of the self. Imagined through a 15/4 time signature grime beat and echoes of malfunctioning code, Isaka hints at our endangered humanity. Isaka’s vocals about missing her chatbot girlfriend are processed through AI models and auto-tune, blurring the line between the organic and the synthetic. 

The final track on ‘Elytra’ takes you to the edge where all the layers fall away and what remains is the raw and unadorned self. Glittering ethereal textures are underpinned by an engulfing bass section that reverberates against the edges of the song. With its poignant melodies and delicate yet impactful percussion, Precipice is a meditation on a moment of self-realization. The track builds towards an overwhelming wall of sound before dropping into a stark sample: “Being trans… is spiritual.” Featuring quotes from Hunter Schafer’s character Jules in Euphoria, processed through an AI model trained on Isaka’s voice, this track explores the complexities of identity and self-discovery.
