Big Mother Gig began their career in Milwaukee after meeting at Marquette University. Since then, they've recorded several albums and EPs and have moved west to Los Angeles. Their newest album Gusto is a deeply personal outpouring of lead singer Richard Jankovich's road to sobriety. Adler talks with Richard and Micah of Big Mother Gig about recording during the pandemic and how the new album differs from their past work.

Today Alex and Lisa chat to Richard Jankovich, an American entrepreneur, musician and author and part of the band, Big Mother Gig. 

Richard is known for Burnside Project who’s “Cue The Pulse To Begin” became the theme to “Queer As Folk” and Pocket, a persona Jankovich used to remix Radiohead, Beck and others to acclaim. 

Big Mother Gig are a Los Angeles-based/Milwaukee-bred band who released Gusto on 30/04/21 featuring lead single “The Underdog” with Leah Wellbaum (Slothrust). This album is a celebration of sobriety, and first and foremost a recovery record. Addressing family, marriage, addiction, anger, serotonin, despair and, ultimately, hope, Gusto is a wide-ranging, emotional journey that focuses on second chances.

Past The Sun

This song was called “My Despair” for a few months and it basically chronicles my depression as it sneaks up on me. I’ve done a lot of work with a type of therapy called EMDR and Voice Dialogue. In these treatments, you actually learn to identify parts of your inner psyche and the roles they play. In my head, there are countless characters that push me to “keep busy” rather than be in the moment. Two of these get mentioned here (the doctor, the general) and how I wish they would leave me alone and let me present. Meditation helps, I do that now too.
