Meeting up with Charlie P and Rico from O.B.F in a studio is like diving into a particle accelerator operating at full speed. Lively, hyperactive, hardworking, Southend’s MC and the greatest warrior of French sound systems just can’t stay put. 

Their creativity works continuously: riddims, melodies, lyrics, clip concepts and other fantasies spurt out at top speed. These common traits allow them to produce explosive collaborations, both on stage and in the studio. 

After the success of the singles “Dub Controller” and “Sixteen Tons of Pressure”, the launch of an album became self-evident. Coming from a modest background in a remote London suburb, Charlie P has been through a lot before understanding that his passion for music could be a vehicle for emancipation. It is this life trajectory, punctuated by difficulties, pitfalls, hard work, encounters and challenges that he tells through the tracks of “Ghetto Cycle”.

Conceived as a concentrate of joint influences, this album gathers tracks in the purest digital dub vein, but also reggae, dance or downright grime. A new stage in the development of their collaboration.

Ghetto Cycle is the soundtrack of Charlie P’s life, set to music by O.B.F.

Dubquake Records proudly presents the first reissue in the label’s history.

We come out strong with a track that involves three essential figures of the UK reggae and dub scene of the 90s: Dennis Rootical, bassist and producer, member of the Iration Steppas sound system, Dub Judah, singer, multi-instrumentalist and bassist at the heart of the Twinkle Brothers, and Jah Shaka, a living legend of sound system culture.

The story of “Better To Be Good” starts with a dubplate, in this case, an exclusive instrumental composed by Dennis Rootical for one of the most illustrious representatives of sound system culture, Jah Shaka. Jah Shaka began playing the track during his sets, and track quickly found success on the dance floor, becoming more and more popular.

Spurred on by the positive reaction, Dennis Rootical then asked Dub Judah to add vocals to the instrumental. A true hymn to positivity, “Better To Be Good” would go on to become the standout track of the eponymous album of Dub Judah.

Previously only available on this 1994 LP release, “Better To Be Good” is reissued by Dubquake accompanied with a previously unreleased and unobtainble dub version on the flip. The two tracks, recorded at the time in 4-track, have also been remastered by Dubtech studio.

On commence fort avec un morceau qui a impliqué trois personnages essentiels de la scène reggae dub anglaise au début des années 90: Dennis Rootical, bassiste et producteur membre du sound system Iration Steppas , Dub Judah, chanteur, multi instrumentiste et bassiste au sein des Twinkle Brothers et Jah Shaka, légende vivante de la culture Sound System.

L’histoire de « Better To Be Good », c’est celle d’une dubplate, en l’occurrence un instrumental exclusif composé par Dennis Rootical destiné à un des plus illustre représentant de la culture sound system, Jah Shaka. Shaka commence à le passer en soirée et le morceau devient de plus en plus populaire avec le succès qu’il rencontre sur
la piste de danse.

Dennis Rootical propose alors à Dub Judah de poser sa voix sur cette
instru. Véritable hymne de positivité, « Better To Be Good » devient le morceau phare de l’album éponyme de Dub Judah.

Auparavant disponible uniquement sur le LP de Dub Judah paru en 1994, « Better To Be Good » est accompagnée par une version dub jusqu’ici introuvable. Les deux titres, enregistrés à l’époque sur un 4 pistes, ont bénéficié d’un nouveau mix réalisé au Dubtech studio.
