The BRSB made a ton of noise with their cult classic cover of 50 Cent's "PIMP" a few years back, most people thinking that it was the original tune 50 sampled from.

This time they take the Steel Drum Funk sound to a deeper part of Hip Hop with their own rendition on the late great classic tune. The A Side is "Bacao Suave",  a surefire version of the tune, and you know we like versions. DJs, have a great time.

The B Side is their rendition of the underground classic "Round & Round" from Hi Tek's Hi-Teknology album. An absolutely killer version of the tune, drums are heavy, steel pans playing thru the melodies, sure to turn heads on the dance floor.

With the full length, Return To The 37th Chamber dropping April 14th, El Michels Affair releases another flawless two sider to hold us over.

Side A’s cover of Tearz is as much an homage to the Wendy Rene sample as it is to the Wu-Tang Clan track.

The song starts as a glazed over cover of "After Laughter" with Shannon Wise of The Shacks singing Wendy Rene's timeless mantra. Halfway through, the mood dramatically shifts and the drums and organ that drive the original RZA sample, take over. A dubbed out Lee Fields taps in like only he can, and the song spirals into outer space.

Side B finds EMA dipping into the deeper side of the Wu catalog with Raekwon’s Verbal Intercourse. Mixing the grimy, gritty production aesthetic of the original with elements of dubbed out reggae, El Michels Affair once again pushes the definition of a “cover” and truly makes it a tune of their own.

Big Crown Records is proud to present this killer two sider reissue from Sunny & The Sunliners.
Sunny Ozuna, who formed his band, Sunny & The Sunliners, in the early 60’s, is a true legend in the history of not just Chicano music, but American music. Sunny “Mr. Brown Eyed Soul” Ozuna is highly regarded as one of the architects of the sweet soul sound that has been comped on countless “Lowrider Oldies” collections, and his music has been pouring out of 1964 Chevy Impalas since, well, 1964.
Side A’s “Should I Take You Home” is one of his flagship tunes that embodies everything that makes Sunny’s music so appealing. A mid tempo masterpiece that is as cool and swaggy as it is sweet and innocent. In his honeyed voice, that's equal parts Little Wille John and Frank Sinatra, Sunny tells the tale of young love and it’s inherent defiance with lines like “there’s no excuse that she would understand, so when I take you home hold me by the hand”. When we asked Sunny about the tune he described it as “a very young thing, a cute thing”. There is undoubtedly something equal parts nostalgic and romantic about a young man puffing his chest out to authority for the love of his girl. It’s this blend of doo wop styled lyrics, B side soul ballad aesthetic, and Tejano vibes that makes this one of the biggest Chicano penned low rider tunes out there.
Side B finds Sunny covering the Harvey Averne Classic “My Dream”. It’s another perfect example of the distinctive blend of Tejano music and American soul that makes Sunny & The Sunliners so unique.
To say we are obsessed with the music of Sunny & The Sunliners would be to put it lightly. We have been working on a proper reissue project for a few years now and the full compilation will be out in 2017.

Sunny & The Sunliners - Should I Take You Home - BC034-45 - Side A

Big Crown Records is proud to present the reissue of this 45 from The Demands.
Hailing from Dallas, Texas, The Demands were originally called The Fabulous Furys in college and switched to The Demands in May of 1969 to play a string of gigs in South Carolina for the summer. They cut the tunes for this single in 1973 with legendary North Texas engineer Phil York, originally pressed on Clem Records, original copies of this Northern Soul burner change hands for upwards of 600 bucks in good condition. The Demands had a moment of on screen fame in ’73 appearing in the Blaxsploitation film “Fox Style” as the house band at an outdoor fashion show. Band leader/founder Melvin Clemmons passed his bass duties to his brother around '79 so he could run his own nightclub and The Demands kept gigging until around '89 when they disbanded.
Side A Say It Again is an up Northern Soul number equal parts hi energy and good vibes. A sureshot for the soul parties, and a very welcome opportunity to put this obscure tune into collections.
Side B’s Let Me Be Myself is a smash of a ballad really showcasing a different side of the groups writing and performing abilities. The sweet soul folks are in for a treat on this one, sure to make it to all the lowrider enthusiasts mixes.

Big Crown Records is proud to launch Big Crown Radio, our label curated podcast of DJ mixes. First up, our own Danny Akalepse takes us for a listen to his Impressions of Impressions Part 1 mix, paying tribute to The Impressions with a mix of Soul & Rock covers of their tunes. To celebrate the launch of the podcast we pressed up a limited edition cassette tape of Impressions of Impressions Part 1 and the forthcoming Part 2 (all reggae covers of Impressions tunes). Expect to hear mixes from Big Crown artists as well as a ton of heavy weight DJs and record collectors that we are happy to call friends and colleagues. 

From Danny on Episode 1: 

“The Impressions, as Curtis, Fred, and Sam are one of my favorite groups ever. I’m really into collecting covers, I have been at it for a long time. I came up with the title for these two mixes and that really got me going, from the artwork to the tunes I really like the way this came out and it seemed fitting to commit it to a tape, two sides worked really well for the genres. This project definitely sent me on a trip digging and digging for more versions to add to what I already had, and I had to leave off some killers so I wouldn’t repeat songs. Some of the records on here aren’t straight covers but tunes that someone jacked Impressions melodies and arrangements and wrote their own verses over them.  At the end of the day this mix has a heady level to it, but I am hoping that even with no context at all, and for people who don’t know who The Impressions are it will still be a good listen just the same. Curtis is a god in reggae, there’s way too many covers to get onto one mix, so I pulled some of the more known ones and some of the more obscure. I collect a lot of reggae records, something most folks don’t know me for, this is the first time I am releasing a reggae mix publicly. I hope everyone enjoys the vibe”.

Bobby Oroza - This Love Pt. 1 - BC064-45 - Side A

Thee Lakesiders are a duo out of Los Angeles comprised of Marie and Necalli who we were introduced to by our friend El Oms. He thought it would be great to get them out here to NY and into the the studio with El Michels. Turns out, he was very right. They spent two days in The Diamond Mine with The Shacks as their backing band and Leon producing and writing with them and cut three songs. Two of which are here on this nice two sider of a 45.

Side A “Si Me Falteras” is worked up into something of a Latin Psych number, it’s a cover of Los Terricolas’s tune they cut in 1973 redone with some more muscle. Ben’s driving beat and Max’s guitar work set the stage for Marie to showcase the powerful side of her voice. 

Side B “Parachute” finds them in one of their favorite styles, a dreamy ballad that floats over guitar chanks, brush hits, and vibraphone rolls. This time Marie shows us a different side of her range, her beautiful and lush vocals ride perfectly in the pocket making for a gorgeous b side that can ride right alongside the oldies.

Thee Lakesiders - Parachute - BC024-45 - Side B

Another stone classic 45 from the legendary Sunny & the Sunliners. Following up on the compilation project and full length reissues we have done, we keep on pressing up some must-haves from his amazing catalog of music. Diehard fans will love to see this one.

The A Side is “The One Who’s Hurting Is You” which was never on an album and the original 45 is pretty tough to find, and pretty expensive when you do, to put it mildly… A killer tune that starts out with Rudy Palacios signature guitar riff, dropping into the haunting back ground vocals and met with Sunny’s lead riding the line between gruff and sweet. Sunny lays down the law and tells it as fact, “there’s one thing that’s for certain, I won’t be doing the hurting. The one who’s hurting is you….”

The B Side, another non album cut, and one of the hardest 45s from Sunny to come across, is the original recording of “Should I Take You Home”. Originally released on Sunny’s Key-Loc label, this is the first version, later in life they remixed it to license it to another label making it brighter and more punchy. This is the lo-fi, the gritty, the original mix, one we are sure fans are going to be happy to finally get a copy of. Another killer two-sider, another Big Crown Sureshot.

Last year, a month before Nicole gave birth to her first child, she visited Leon Michels in upstate NY and cooked up two of the toughest and most moving songs we’ve heard from her to date. We’ve been patiently sitting on this release for a few months now, and it is an understatement to say Big Crown is proud to present the newest 45 from Lady Wray.
Side A,“Piece Of Me” , sounds like a lost Dilla beat that sampled a lost David Porter song. Guaranteed to have heads nodding from the first snare crack, Nicole sings a tune about the difficulties of dealing with family and friends who need more than you can provide. The chorus says it all, “I’ll let you take a piece of me, I hope you get the piece you need, and if that’s not enough I’ll let you go peacefully...” From the jump, Nicole’s voice takes the listener into a world where you have no choice but to feel something in the pit of your stomach.
Side B “Come On In” finds Lady Wray tapping into her early years singing in church. With only three instruments and Nicole’s voice, “Come On In” is a masterclass in the craft of singing, the sound of soul, and the power of restraint.
