Have You Seen The Fairies?

Taking its title from a fascinating book of the same name by writer, publisher and ultra-runner, Robin Harvie, this tune attempts to give musical expression to the reasons why I regularly lace up my running shoes and leave the house to pound the country lanes and footpaths near to where I live when there are arguably a thousand-and-one more "important" things I could be doing with my precious time.

Robin's book is both an intriguing study of his own personal journey to the start line of one of the toughest ultra races on earth: the Spartathlon, and a pleasingly detailed history of the act of distance running itself. This, my first electronic music release for several months, is much more modest in scale - very much like my running ambitions (at least when compared to Robin's) - but it could be said that it attempts to capture and articulate the same, natural urge.

Why We Run was made entirely in Ableton Live v11 using Spitfire Audio's LABS plug-in for some of the component sounds. It was composed and recorded during spring/summer 2022.

I uploaded a short song I made in early spring this year.
The image of this song is "Ancient people who have obtained fire bravely go through many nights while being frightened."
I started with AudioThing's noises only, but ended up adding some bass, strings, etc.
It is an all-MIDI production.

Die Schatten an der Wand, oder die bewegenden Schatten durch die Sonnenreflektionen oder der Schein einer Kerze.
Schatten wo auch immer diese uns begegnen, haben eine magische, stille und manchmal auch bedrohliche Erscheinung.

Aber es liegt an uns diese zu deuten. Sie können unsere tiefsten Seelenmomente spiegeln.
Sie tanzen mit unseren Gefühlen und Ängsten. Jedoch sind wir der Regisseur.
Wir täuschen uns selbst und spielen uns etwas vor. 

Die Illusion der Seele.

Es ist ein Mirakel. 

Diese philosophischen Gedanken habe ich versucht in dieser Komposition zum Ausdruck zu bringen.

The shadows on the wall, or the moving shadows caused by the sun's reflections, or the glow of a candle.
Shadows wherever we encounter them have a magical, silent, and sometimes menacing appearance.

But it is up to us to interpret them. They can mirror our deepest soul moments.
They dance with our feelings and fears. However, we are the director.
We deceive ourselves and pretend.

The illusion of the soul.

It's a miracle.

I tried to express these philosophical thoughts in this composition.
