My Mum requested that, at her funeral(today, 16 January 2022, being the third anniversary), our sisterJayne and her children made arrangements to cover her coffin in pink roses as a sign to everybody that we should celebrate her life and not mourn her death.  They found a casket with a pink rose design too, which would have pleased her even more.  She wanted to be remembered for the good times she had with her family and many close friends.  Mum enjoyed parties and celebrations a great deal.

In writing the song, I wanted to represent all the important parts of Mum's life to help us to remember what an incredibly generous person she was,  always there to help those who needed some extra love and attention.  We grew up in a house that was somewhere our friends and neighbours could always turn to if they needed help. Throughout our lives it wasn't at all unusual to wake up in the morning to find someone who needed refuge asleep on the sofa.  Neighbours' children would join us for meals on a regular basis and Mum made sure there was always plenty to go round..

At the funeral itself, as the chorus explains, I felt so uncomfortably exposed, standing at the front with all eyes seemingly looking at me, gauging every reaction. I think Jayne and Gal felt much the same if truth be told.  Even with my wife and children there to support me, it was one of those moments in life I don't think any of us ever really wants to face. 

We will certainly never forget our wonderful Mum and all the things she did for us.  She always made special times just a bit more special, going that extra mile so that the memories would last a lifetime.

I felt it was particularly important to write this song for my sister, who was the main carer for my Mum in the latter years of her life and dealt with all the difficulties with so much love, care and strength.  This song is for you Jayne, with all our love. 

As always, we give our heartfelt thanks to Hans for producing an arrangement so in keeping with the spirit of the song and the occasion it marks.

I've written a sort of fugue for clarinet and violin, a piece ennobled by the brilliant presence of Tatiana and Georg, whom I sincerely thank for their performance! Their parts weren't really easy, a lot of intertwined notes chasing each other, and they were great, thanks to both of them!

First Snow Morning

I wrote this song as a tribute to love that endures beyond this world as we know it. My best friend lost his battle with cancer several years ago, but as I often think of him I have envisioned his parting moments with his dear wife by his side. This is just my thoughts on it, I won’t pretend to represent the actual intimacies that would possibly have transpired, but I do have a good idea of how much they cared for each other, and still do.

The more I learn, the more I've become fascinated by the mysterious and elusive nature of consciousness and the creative process. Ideas that flow freely one day become elusive the next, and when and if they resurface, they've usually gone through some kind of evolution not of my making. This piece has been a long time in gestation, evolving and shifting as I've played around with various patterns and transitions.

SUMMER IS ON IT'S WAY JOSE (Dedicated To My Marine Brother)RIP

This song is about the first time my eldest son realised that nothing in life is forever.  He was just 5 at the time.  One evening, I was giving him a bath when, completely out of the blue, he asked me “Where’s your Dad today?” 

My Dad had died a couple of years before Jason was born and, whilst I had no problem giving him a straight answer, did wonder what had suddenly prompted the question.

I tried to explain that my Dad was no longer alive, a difficult concept for a child of 5 to fully grasp, hence his follow-up question, “Is he playing games and pretending, just like you and me?” 

There’s nothing my Dad would have loved more than to come over and play some games, and I found it more than a little tricky to tell Jason exactly why he couldn’t.  He was asking who my Dad was - “Who do you talk to? Who do you play with?” - and I had to find a way of telling him that, at some point, everyone’s life just kind of moves on.

As he processed this, his eyes started to well with tears.  He asked me if I would always be there, and if I would always be his Dad and I told him that, whatever happened, there would only ever be one Dad for us both.  The fact that I too was now crying may well have made this rather hard to decipher, but the hug he gave me showed just how much he understood.  It was a moment I have never forgotten.

Sharing that moment is something we still talk about, a memory we both recall with such clarity and such overwhelming fondness, a remembrance that will last the rest of our lives.

As always, working on this track with Hans has been such a complete pleasure.  He is not only a master musician and producer but a brilliant interpreter of songs – this track is everything I wanted it to be, and I cannot thank him enough for that.
