O disco, editado três anos após o seu antecessor, foi produzido por Markus Dravs, com o auxílio de Paul Epworth na faixa de encerramento, "Mother".

sobre os temas do álbum, Welch disse em um comunicado de imprensa, " eu acho que, embora eu sempre tratei da fantasia e metáfora quando eu ia escrever, as músicas desta vez estão lidando muito mais com a realidade.
