Call out racism in your networks and be vigilant about using your privilege to give voices to the unheard.

It takes more than just not being racist; you must be actively anti-racist. This means educating yourself on the systemic racism and inequality that plague us and learning what to say instead of being silent for fear of saying the wrong thing. Here are a few great reads to get you started:

Get aware of your own microaggressions. I’m not going to give examples (it’s triggering for some BIPOC to even read that dumb ass shit), so you can google it.

Educate your children on racial injustice and police brutality. Raise them to lead with love and stick up for  BIPOC when they are being bullied. They are not too young. Black children don’t have the luxury of being “too young” to experience racism, so we must teach our youngest how to love and defend the BIPOC they know. Start here:

INCLUDE BLACK LGBTQ people and STOP MISGENDERING THEM.  

Call out your family members and friends who are comfortably and/or unconsciously racist around you. Your silence enables their racism. Offer them resources and constructive discussion. It isn’t easy, but I have truly changed the minds of people I know and love who were totally misguided and unaware. While it doesn’t erase their past wrongdoings, it can prevent them from causing trauma for BIPOC in the future.
