Phonic Mirror # 11 is called Love is Lovely War Is Ugly. It's a new mix of music from the '80s and '90s: These tunes span digital reggae exploration, midi-mayhem, dancehall b-side digital delay versions, and soul-phasing creative covers. For the past seven years, I've collected 45s and records from the Caribbean and the cities folks migrated to. I've had boxes and boxes of LPs and 45s disorganized for a while and recently had a moment to sit and listen more. It's been hard to separate the ones I don't want; for every song I might not like, the B-side version sheds light on a creative take on the A-side. Play this loud, and make sure you have bass.

Martyn is the finest example of an artist who exists outside traditional genre boundaries. Ever since the mid-90s, the Dutchman has operated in his own adjacent worlds while drawing on UK bass hybrids, techno and electro to cook up singular rhythms and unique moods. The 3024 label head has always used his platform to bring through new talent, and now also mentors young artists with his own Patreon program. This sits next to his ever spell-binding performances in the club and eye-opening monthly Darkest Light show on NTS, which is a deep dive into his love of jazz. 

This week's mix is a 70-plus minute snapshot of Martyn's sound, which is as timeless as ever. From the crispness of Detroit electro to the off-beat thump of bass via his deep techno lit up with glistening electronics, it is a perfect blend of body and head and one full of brazen moves. There's a switch to jazz-laced broken beat and low, then the slow wobble of dubstep before a rebuild towards old school jungle that proves this is the sound of a true master at work.

This mix bears nearly three hours of winding explorations as James DJed for a lounge of interlocking bodies: 
–drifters in obscure motion and silent during a non-verbal hour.

There were paper and pens, so people wrote and drew to each other instead of talking. They would also mime, or speak with the body.

For December's event at Limehouse Town Hall, James will bring a fascinating set of ambients for dream or dance.

Sometime after dawn, in my favorite warehouse in Detroit – the Tangent – I got to play my favorite party filled with all my favorite DJs – No Way Back. It felt like the time for the party to take a deep breath and refill its lungs. Playing directly after Patrick Russell and right before Erika, I took the moment to give the party what I felt it needed. First, rays of light, and then expansions and contractions in the sound. 

For the technique, I played on a Model One mixer with a Moog MF Delay pedal and 4 CDJs. Much of the music is upcoming on Interdimensional Transmissions, or things I have recorded in and remastered for DJing, especially to be played on the giant Jim Gibbons rig in this room, a process I call “quick masters” or “QM” for short. Some are very rare, some have never been playable in this context, or lost gems by my heroes, like CH BB. Some are new jams being played for the first time, like “Another Planet” where I jammed with Neel in his studio in Rome this spring on my 608 (modified 606) and 303. My favorite approach to NWB is to compose new music for it and test it there, it is such a special room.
