5. Uncle Moustache

Uncle moustache is the name of my weird neighbour
A tall skinny man who from a distance
Seems all like a head and a big moustache
He never invites anyone to his home
Nor does he talk to anyone much
At night, when he arrives home
I hear him from the kitchen, saying:

Oh darling! I’m in love with those tiny eyes
Darling! I’m in love with those sharp ears

I’ve never seen a woman coming out of his house
Nor any children to make noise from the inside
In the mornings when he wants to get to work
He doesn’t leave any doors or windows open
At night, when he arrives home
I hear him through the cooler canal, saying:

Oh darling! I’m in love with those tiny eyes
Darling! I’m in love with those sharp ears

In the sixth episode of Siamak Pourzand Foundation’s People of the Underground podcast series, Bijan Moosavi, artist and musician, speaks about the dimensions of underground arts globally, and in Iran. More specifically, he discusses rock tradition and examines whether it can be by default considered an underground genre that challenges the status quo in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In doing so he provides a comparative outlook with the emergence of rock music and other genres that countered societal norms in the United States in mid and late 20th Century. Bijan further unfolds this discussion by providing an analysis of the evolution of various genres, traditional music included, ever since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. He also addresses the parallel production that the Islamic Republic has undertaken in the previous decade to compete with various forms of underground arts that it cannot fully eliminate by censorship alone. He names “governmental pop” as one of the most self-explanatory examples of this strange hybrid form of music sponsored by the Islamic Republic. Bijan also speaks about Cafe performances in Iran as a way for glimpses of underground music to occasionally surface above the ground for limited audiences. He calls Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presidency a truly dark era for arts in Iran. Yet, he speculates that Hassan Rouhani’s presidency has brought about a wave of a privately-led endeavours to attract artists and to employ their art for commercial use, challenging the ethics, authenticity and the future of underground arts and artists in the years to come.

در برنامه‌ی هفدهم رادیو ریزوم سراغ «شهرزاد» می‌رویم تا چند ماه بعد از اختتامیه‌ی باشکوهش در برج میلاد، روشن کنیم بالاخره «رفیقش کجاست؟» در این برنامه، رَدِ بوی پول را از لابه‌لای نگاتیوها می‌گیریم تا به جیب بانک‌ها و پولدارها برسیم، مافیای نشر را با نام و آدرس و کروکی افشا می‌کنیم، از بساط فروش ادبیات و هنر در بقالی‌ها و گالری‌ها و پردیس‌ها حرف می‌زنیم و قیمت خرید احمد شاملو، صمد بهرنگی و حمید اشرف در مزایده را روشن می‌کنیم. در هفدهمین برنامه‌ی رادیو ریزوم از موسیقی زیرزمینی‌ای می‌گوییم که زیرِ زمین نیست، هم‌دستی صدای «معترض» معاصر و ترانه‌سرای «شورشی» را با یک پروژه‌ی امنیتی به یاد می‌آوریم و سری به عمارت مسعودیه و جوان‌های کولِ پالت می‌زنیم. در برنامه‌ی هفدهم رادیو ریزوم نشان می‌دهیم گفتار غالب در میان هنرمندان و نویسندگان چگونه دولت مستقر و وضعیت حاکم را تقویت می‌کند، کدام هنرمندان و نویسندگان موجب خارج شدن بهداشت و آموزش از دسترس فرودستان می‌شوند و چه کسی کارگران را از بالای ساختمان‌های بلند هل می‌دهد. در این برنامه سفری می‌کنیم به سرزمین اشباح مشبک با علی‌اشرف درویشیان و در تمام برنامه با هم به اضمحلالی گوش می‌کنیم که روزگارِ ما در حال پیمودن آن است.
