Falling Down the Stairs

When I sit down to write, what often comes to me most naturally (and at times against my own will) are lullabies and waltzes, or some combination of the two. I have obvious sources to blame for this - primarily the fairytale films I adored in my childhood and the timeless melodies that came with them, always embellished with strings, bells and harps. Writing Fairy Songs was a way of celebrating and indulging in my life-long obsession with the lullaby as a mode of music. To me, a lullaby is ephemeral and miniature, shining and secret - something you can hold in your palm, like a keepsake in a trinket box. Some of these songs are intricate and impressionist, others simple and tender, and all are connected in this small, glowing feeling.

The sonic world of this EP is an exploration in what I’ve been referring to as magic realism in sound - my usual sparkly synths are balanced with acoustic sounds, moments of pause and textural noise; I wanted to hear the human hand in the ethereal - as though these sounds were not created in an electronic world, but have always existed among us in the real world. Maybe we’d hear them if we just listened close enough?

The purpose of this sūtra is to help sentient beings—any being that has the capacity to feel—in a troubled and tumultuous world. According to the sūtra, all beings can overcome suffering and achieve happiness, leading to greater prosperity and longevity. Its intention is to remove our karmic obstacles, eliminate disasters and calamities, dispel enmity and hatred, fulfill all wishes, and guide us quickly onto the path of the Buddha.
