The Barefoot Adventures - Worldwide Series

The Barefoot Adventures returns as I dive into Libya, a troubled but hugely historical country situated amongst the Sahara Desert. After speaking to some new friends from Libya, I began to learn of the complicated situation and history of this place. Within Libya there is little to no self-made pop music industry, but various kinds of Arab music are popular, such as Andalusi music, locally known as Ma'luf, Chabi, not to mention Arab classical music, and Libyan Reggae which came to the surface in the 90’s.

In the south the Tuareg (Berber) have their own distinctive folk music. They play a one-stringed violin called an anzad, as well as a variety of drums.
Two of the most famous musicians of Libya are Ahmed Fakroun and Mohammed Hassan.
Rhythmic clapping is also common in Libyan folk music.
Traveling Bedouin poet-singers have spread many popular songs across Libya. Among their styles is Huda, the camel driver's song, the rhythm of which is said to mimic the feet of a walking camel.

So excited to continue this beloved series with a sonic exploration of Laos. This episode we discover rare cuts and selections from an array of time-periods in this countries complicated timeline. I take us on an auditory time-capsule, learning the sounds of Mor Lam, Luang Prabang (traditional court music), music of the Khene flute (instrument of Laos), Vietiane and Chmapasak styles.

Episode 13 - Brazil

Brazil, one of the most precious places to me on this earth.
I was lucky enough to live in and out of Sao Paulo last year for a few months. Waking to papayas and acaí, trips to the padaria and through dense green jungly mountains, being shown a whole new world of music, rhythm and energy that is a complete contrast to what I had known before. I think that maybe explains at least a little of my fascination.

This one has been one of the hardest - how to squeeze this country into one hour? So many artists with so many gem tracks.
This mix is more about my favorite tracks than giving you a diverse 'unheard' selection.. this is only the beginning.
I’ll just have to do a part two!

Samba, Choro, Latin Jazz, Frevo, Bossanova, Tropicalia, and Forró are just a few of the styles of music you can find within Brazil’s rich, never-ending music offerings.

I return to my travels and head to the north of Africa, a land of ancient and mystic beauty, Morocco.

There are many traditional music styles in the countries history:
GNAWA 
(a spiritual music from an ethnic group dating back to 11th century slaves encaptured in Morocco, whose music is tightly linked to the connection with Allah, using the main rhythm of a double headed drum)
BERBER /AMAZIGH 
(an ancient style known for its handclapping rhythms, drums flute and fiddles) 
ANDALUSIAN 
(a Spanish/Middle Eastern influenced music of the north part of Morocco which mainly uses vocals, the lute, fiddle, violin, drum and tambourine) and many other ancient styles.

After a long break, the barefoot adventures makes its return.

Something about Thailand really got me when I visited last year to play at Wonderfruit Festival. After a week in Bangkok I headed south for a perfect cheesy family holiday (on an island) with Mr Rux and Martha. 
What a trip that was.

When I was in Bangkok I ended up visiting Zudragma Records.
A tiny wooden store on a small side street, hidden within the hustle and bustle of the city. Inside was simply one of the greatest collection of old Thai music, Molam, Luk Thung and selected vinyl from all over the world.  I spent the day there and left with a ginormous buzz from this music I had just discovered.

I can't wait to come back.

This episode we visit the ancient lands of Egypt.
From Folkloric, Nubian to Saidi (Upper Egyptian)sounds, we explore
the old and new arabic music where classical instruments such as the oud, qanun and ney are widely used. 

The tonal structure of Oriental Middle Eastern music is defined by the maqamat, loosely similar to the Western modes, while the rhythm of Middle Eastern music is governed by the iqa'at, standard rhythmic modes formed by combinations of accented and unaccented beats and rests (wikipedia).

The Barefoot Adventures - 20 -  Hungary

By far one of my favorite musical journeys so far, I take you to the Democratic Republic of Congo. An up-lifting mix of rhythm, Rumba, Soukous and Afro-latin grooves.

After the Congo Crisis and their independence from Belgium in the 1960’s, between the 1960s and 1970s, Congolese musicians absorbed musical influences from various parts of the world. Genres included American jazz, rhythm and blues, European and Cuban music. The Afro-Latin sounds of Cuba were so influential that some Congolese musicians even sometimes sang in Spanish. New genres were created such as Congolese rumba or Soukous and the Congolese guitar style influenced numerous musicians in the African continent.

Musicians based in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) and Brazzaville were very popular and thousands of fans throughout the Congo and elsewhere in Africa danced to their songs. Legends of the scene included Docteur Nico, Grand Kallé and Tabu Ley, Franco’s OK Jazz Orchestra and Verckys.

DRC has over 200 native languages including French, but in the end I found dear Cédric Dh to record the introduction in the native Lingala language. Thanks again for listening.

The Barefoot Adventures - 21 - Democratic Republic of Congo

As the cold approaches, I head east to the vast and ancient lands of Mongolia. Over the rugged expanses, mountains and through its capital Ulaanbaatar. 
Learning about Mongolian culture was deeply fascinating and leaves me with a yearning curiosity to discover more of the history of Mongolia.

I decided to focus on the traditional side of sound.
My selection aims to showcase the rich tradition of throat singing (höömji), long song, court music, and Mongolian pop.

The Barefoot Adventures  - 22 - Mongolia

This month's episode focuses on Panama, a country diverse in rich wildlife, biodiversity and mixed culture.

I became fascinated with the somewhat electric energy of its musical traditions, ranging from salsa to reggae, jazz, cambia, pastille and tamborito. A country first influenced by the indigenous populations of Kunas, Teribes, Ngobe Bugle and others, then by the black population who were brought over, first as slaves from Africa, between the 16th century and the 19th century, and then voluntarily (especially from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Saint Lucia) to work on the Panamanian Railroad and Canal projects between the 1840s and 1914.

This lead to a diverse culture and sound.
Here is my take on what I found when digging through the musical history books of Panama.
