Album: Monthly Discipline (2010/2011)

A collection of the harder styles coming from the BioStorm kitchen! Inspired by how we did it in the 90's. Influences from a more recent period too of course.

Harder, Faster, Stronger

Once again, the BioStorm was up for some dark atmosphere, kicking kicks, bursts and breaks. This one is for the hard electronic lovers.

This horror inspired track was completely custom made. Meaning: getting to know my own equipment a bit more. And getting the most out of my synths, samplers and effects.

Even used an old toypiano our family used to play with some decades ago. It seemed to fit :) It's long, loud and hope you like this story about the woods! This fairy tale might not end well!

The Woods

Another manic dark atmosphered track from the BioStorm kitchen! Inspired by the title I thought up first. Having the 'number' theme of the upcoming fourth album.

Started with adding harp, bell, synth and of course the beat. Oh, don't forget the scream and choir for dramatic effect.

Been tweaking it for a while now. Do think of it as a little earworm myself. Enjoy! Comments are welcome! TIA

Your Days Are Numbered

A dark hard dance track about the gates of hell. Or so I have been told :p (by a person with lyrics below)

This little thing was inspired by a movie, this happens sometimes. Of course, I always like the choir-sound in hardcore tracks and tension of the darker tales! ;)

So, this basically started with text I had written after seeing the movie. The basis of the track being the choir, kick and recorded custom(!)vocals.

Being a perfectionist, it took me a while to clean it up and get the levels the way I wanted. Did succeed though and happy to share now! What y'all think?!

741 Feet Deep

This track was based on experimentation with multiple fx on a 909 kick. Once I had a dry and more "spring" sounding kick, I went with some distorted lead sounds. Cheering it all up with a breakbeat :)

Once I had an idea for the vocals, being "German lyrics", I came up with the theme of "tempo". This also meant I "had" to put in a tempo-difference of course. Oh, and a metronome!

Also wanted to use a distorted 303 sample in a non-303 way. This was also added to the mix. As well as some wobble and other nice filling sounds. Fooled around with a few buildups, and here it is!

Having a history of making all kinda tracks using samples from movies, TV and radio since 1995, it was time to take up the challenge of merely using copyright free samples and my own instruments. 

Being an acid enthusiast since 1988, why not start with that. Consider this a demo while 'finding my own style', getting to know my equipment better and hopefully fun to check out for others.

According to my administration (ahum) this track would be from the year 2000. Re-recorded in 2001, if you can call it that. Since I do not have the exact same setup anymore, in terms of hardware, I can not reproduce and record it again. 

Either way, here's another item I'd like to share. Is it trance, is it techno? I don't even know myself. It may not be gold, but there's a nice flow inthere somewhere! :)

Transation

This is something else. I'd like to think the creative process was interesting. 

Without an actual plan I started with the melody of strings on a hiphop-tempo. All quite harmless. After that came the scratch. Soon I decided to add the guitar, working that out in layers. Of course, this already gave the track a dark flavour. And this was *before* I started recording the dark voices. 

Considering it was the first time I was recording my own vocal samples, I was content with the result of the vocals: it's all me! Adding breakbeats and more percussion were the last steps. The end result being a kinda heavy, dark, dragging and strange track. Well, judge for yourself!

In The Dark

Here's another one! Since life is all about balance I wanted to make a less dark track than 'In The Dark'. So I started with the idea of something more party-like. In the end, I think I did succeed. And it has my 'own sound' all over it. 

Already made a first setup of one minute long in September. During my holiday I kept listening and thinking about which level to take the track to. Had already written some text for shoutouts and vocals. But when working them out yesterday, I noticed only bits and pieces would work though.

Other additions I had in mind did work immediately, i.e. I added the wooshes. Yesterday I thought it was pretty much finished. But the 'BioStorm of Creativity' in my mind took over this morning, making me add a nice break in the track.

Also experienced some technical difficulties though, lost some samples due to bad storage. That was also this morning! :( But I overcame that challenge too. So I can release it on 10-10-10 after all. So far the story behind the track. Have a listen I'd say :)

Beats And Bleeps

While playing around with a lead sound in a melody that started quite happy, I soon switched to a more suspense kinda feel in the melody. 

Adding a homemade bassdrum, which turned out to be warm, I went for the sci-fi sound. No surprise that was leading to adding robotic vocals I'd say :)

The end product? Is it trancy, is it hardcore, maybe a little of both worlds? Speaking of worlds, I bring you the stars. Icy stars!


Icy Stars

This track started out as a quick concept I made while I was making other tracks at the time. In the beginning I had piano, the obvious hardstyle kick and the high synth pattern. Soon after, adding the filtered break, horns and violins. Also came up with some shout-outs (but did not record them yet).

In the meantime I was aiming for the hoover-sound in some other side-project. That sound has been used many times before in history, but it's so freakin' cool, just had to make one myself! Since I succeeded, decided to put it in this track - in several ways.

Have been tweaking it for a while now. And today it's time for sharing! Have a listen and let me know what you think. Thanks!



Powerpump

This time, as intended, a more uptempo and hard track. You can see this one as an experiment with some more custom samples. Like the title suggests, I was looking for contrast in the arrangement. The starting points being a raw distortion-like lead and bassdrum.

The process of making this version was nice to go through. I made quite a few pre-productions for myself, with which I was not satisfied. Step by step ending up with this arrangement, that is closest to what I tried to achieve from the beginning.


Digital Contrast

BioStorm is always inspired by the old and the new styles around him. Ever since hearing the first 303 acid dripping tracks in 1988, he travelled through time via house, techno, trance, hardcore, drum and bass, dubstep, hiphop and pop. At the age of 18 was selling his moped to buy a sampler instead the right move because. Because decades later he's still at it, working from The Netherlands, which is an actual country in Western Europa :) His philosophy is: electronic dance music DOES have a soul and comes in many forms. BioStorm is not about one style, but one universal language.
