In 2020 we saw the emergence of one of the freshest record labels to emerge out of NYC in an age. We love this label here at 1BTN HQ and are over the moon to hand over the 1BTN airwaves to Our Starry Universe for a 12hr takeover.

DJ’ing since his formative years in the frozen Northern reaches of Yorkshire Johnston has been many things; Acid-House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Alpinist, Hardway Bros and Freelance Disco Consultant but it is his recent production work and now legendary club night that he has best become known for the world over. From the early 90’s institution that was Sabresonic to Disco Bloodbath, Sean has played at many of London’s landmark clubs. He also plays regularly at Berlin’s premier underground venue Salon Zur Wilden Renate, festivals in French castles and the Dalmatian coast, as well as across the whole breadth of this fine aural landscape we live in.

Our Starry Universe Takeover - Sean Johnston - 30.04.2021

Black Light Smoke’s US-based imprint Death Decay Magic invites The Hacker, Cardopusher, Man 2.0 and Adrian Marth to remix tracks from the first three releases on the imprint.

After seven years of brand building as a podcast mix series, Death Decay Magic was launched as a record label in March 2020 by Jordan Lieb aka Black Light Smoke. With a DIY ethos, Death Decay Magic explores the darker, eclectic realms of electronic music, bridging techno with EBM, minimal synth and post-punk.

Death Decay Magic Remixes Vol. 1 is a compilation remix EP, drawing on the first three Death Decay Magic releases; Black Light Smoke ‘Line and Shadows’, Daniel Holt ‘Traveler’, and Man 2.0 & Black Light Smoke ‘Holy Hammer’. Death Decay Magic invites remixes from The Hacker, Cardopusher, Adrian Marth, Man 2.0, and Black Light Smoke on a release that illustrates the labels blueprint perfectly: raw, edgy synth music with ghostly vocals; one foot in techno, the other stepping out into the unknown.

Zone Music boss The Hacker gets things underway with a crunchy remix of Black Light Smoke ‘Lines’ featuring crystalline leads, zapping synths and whirring stabs. Up next, Man 2.0 and Black Light Smoke’s ‘Bodywork’ gets a remix from Classicworks founder Cardopusher as he takes the remix into mystifying territories with revolving modulations bouncing elegantly off the chugging rhythm. Night Noise artist Man 2.0 follows by laying down an industrial-tinged electro remix of ‘Traveler’ with otherworldly atmospheres, gauzy textures and dynamic elements.
Italo Moderni label boss Adrian Marth follows with an interpretation of ‘Bank For God’ as the spiralling EBM sonics flow vigorously and the drilling rhythms get to work underneath. DDM honcho Black Light Smoke then finishes things off with a version of his track, ‘Your Own Hands,’ which fuses rubbery bass grooves, playful melodies and vibrant 909s.

Ascended Man is the pseudonim for Olivier Abbeloos, know from T99, Quadraphonia,... joins us on this release with a masterpeace. The track connects modern underground Electro with the strong and dark NewBeat. Another floorfiller.

"Washing the Machine" is the closing track, and a reference to the classic house sound of the Warehouse and other early Traxx, and still fresh and very NewBeat.

Birds is the musical project of UK born, Netherlands based DJ Katie Wilkinson. Her music is a melting pot of Techno, 90s acid, Electro and 80’s EBM and New Wave, with her more recent material also incorporating more bass heavy sounds. She has released on labels such as Höga Nord, Ombra International, NEIN, Freeride Millennium, Hard Fist and Samo Records before founding her own label Feed The Void, a label which aims to showcase her eclectic tastes. She has also received a lot of love for for her captivating live sets. 2024 will see her release her first full length LP and the return of these infamous live sets. 

As a DJ, as well as through her music she exercises a never ending desire to explore sonic possibility and switch up genres continuously. Her sets reflect these curiosities and have an extremely transcendent nature to them; you never know whether you'll find yourself dancing to churning low tempo industrial techno, high octane acid bass lines, Italo, experimental Breaks or something far and between these things. Nothing is too weird or intense for a Birds DJ set. She has a monthly radio show on Netil Radio (the fourth Tuesday of the month 5pm-7pm), which is a residency that she's had for the past six years and is a regular face on local radio station, Operator. She has also played everywhere from Melbourne, to Mexico City, to Zagreb and many more locations around the world, sharing line-ups with the likes of Boys Noize, Pablo Bozzi, Jennifer Touch, Kris Baha, Marie Pravda, Ivna Ji, Martial Canterel, Perel & more.
