Description: One of my favorite recordings from a pelagic birding trip off the coast of Dunedin. There were dozens of Pintado Petrels chirping and squawking right beside the boat. You can also hear albatrosses squabbling.

Dawn Chorus Day 2022

Listening with ancient trees.
Starting our journey to this ancient forest at midnight,scrabbling o ver large granite stones and undulating paths.

A night walk in a temperate rain forest in Dartmoor Devon UK.
Close your eyes and take a sonic journey of deep earthly time  with this ancient tree that's been a silent witness to layers of history.

The sounds you here are after a warm day are  tiny popping  that is the sound of water passing through the cells of the xylem tubes and cavitating as it mixes with air on its way upwards.

I have wanted to capture for years what goes on behind the bark of a tree,I spent hours with this ancient trees at night to escape as much human noise as possible.Using highly sensitive contact microphones and hydrophones,handmade pre-amps and probes  to make audible the inner workings of trees. I first heard the moss layers of the bark as it  hydrated and dehydrated  then the rumble of the tree moving and the popping of the water,and the odd plane going past.

Four years in a row I have been trying to record wolves. I have been lucky most years but since they have changed rendez-vouz area it took longer than usual this year. Now I have pinpointed where they are and maybe I will get better recording in the coming weeks. This is a perfect time of the year to listen for wolves.

I heard this Greater Spotted woodpecker everyday whilst walking to the shop or just generally around and kept meaning to record it. The tree it was drumming on and a really interesting tone to it and hadn't really heard anything before so I sat on a bench under the tree, which was next to a Childs play park and sat and recorded/listen to it for a bit longer.

A large, empty, aircraft hangar. Building 135 on Waterbeach barracks, Cambridge, UK.  I had intended to record a passing thunderstorm but the forecast storm never arrived - only some wind and rain, the large hangar doors moving in the breeze, roosting pigeons, corvids and other assorted wildlife.
