Program note: Prelude is a duo for cello and piano that was written to precede attacca into the Brahms e minor cello sonata without pause (though it may also be performed alone) and is affectionately written for and dedicated to Zlatomir Fung and Tengku Irfan.

Edit: It is most likely a pine marten. I had another recording with visual contact and the sounds were pretty similar.

Creature of night

Not having Disquieted for some time, and not being completely on board with the intention of the project after admittedly skimming various pages, I got all enthusiastic when I saw Bernie Krause’s name and realised the sonic lineage of the assembled creators.

I delved into my old “field recordings” folder (okay, me playing with a Tascam) and chose three or five, then cut them up, treated them and reprocessed them (according to whim and instinct) in Audacity using basic effects and plugins.

I still have no idea if this really fits the brief or not but it was fun.

A large, empty, aircraft hangar. Building 135 on Waterbeach barracks, Cambridge, UK.  I had intended to record a passing thunderstorm but the forecast storm never arrived - only some wind and rain, the large hangar doors moving in the breeze, roosting pigeons, corvids and other assorted wildlife.

Entering Spiderkiss Nest

This is the first time I participate in the annual ice cubes challenge of the Disquiet Junto. I first recorded the sound of ice cubes falling into a glass in Audacity. Then I slowed the recording down 10 and 50 times. I made three versions of a 30 times slowed down recording: with pitch change, without pitch change and paulstretch. I also made a reversed version of the original recording.
I loaded all recordings in Nysthi's Quad Simpler in VCV Rack. The original recording goes through a delay for a nice stereo rhythm. The three 30 times slowed down versions are combined to make a comfy bed for the basses and melodies to lie in. They are triggered every now and then bij the EOC-trigger of the 10 times slowed down version. The 50 times slowed down version makes for a really deep bass, but it also provides, through an envelope follower, CV for the pitch of a sawtooth that is filtered and the cut-off frequency is controlled by the reverse recording (also through an envelope follower). This is triggered by the EOC-trigger of the original recording, to get some nice synchronicity.
After pondering the relevant questions of how to start and how to stop, I came up with this.
