I'd been laboring at making academic acoustic (modern classical and avant-garde) music for years, with a lot of frustration along the way. At that time a good friend was dealing with cancer, and he passed after a few months. Experiencing that, and talking with him about his experience of it, made me question my priorities. I decided to ignore external pressures for a while and just make the music that I thought would be fun to make and listen to...time is short!
