Hand picked selections to make your day a little bit better. This week's collection focuses on music centered around the "Amen Break." We celebrate this sample in all of it's varying permutations and it's everlasting effect on electronic dance music.

What Is the Amen Break?
"The Amen break is a 6- to 7-second (4-bar) drum solo performed by Gregory Sylvester "G. C." Coleman in the song "Amen, Brother" performed by the 1960s funk and soul outfit The Winstons."

"It gained fame from the 1980s onwards when four bars (6 seconds) sampled from the drum-solo (or imitations thereof) became very widely used as sampled drum loops in breakbeat, hip hop, breakbeat hardcore, hardcore techno and breakcore, drum and bass (including oldschool jungle and ragga jungle), and digital hardcore music." - Wikipedia

On an afternoon like this, when it’s sunny and you’re utterly spent from a weekend, it’s easy to fumble over words, spending far too long trying to choose the best way to put something. But sometimes serendipity has an even more poignant way of putting it and well, describing Remarc’s music is very much like the affected sound-bite introduction to Remarc’s FABRICLIVE x Planet Mu Mix says: “Remarc: original junglist badboy sound”. 

For our purpose today, it’s undoubtedly easier to talk about Planet Mu’s involvement in Remarc’s career, considering that the jungle pioneer and respected master of the amen drum break will be appearing in the Mu hosted Room Two on Friday 20th June. But the fact is, they first started working together reissuing Remarc’s earlier material on the Sound Murderer album, so you can’t really even try and avoid it. That said, the first tune of his that a lot of people latched onto and recognised was ‘Ricky’, a track released in 1993 on his own Dollar label…

As you can hear, the template for a cataclysm of such bounding bass lines and scattershot drum programming that personify jungle music was starting to be interpreted by Remarc in a pretty violent way. Not violent because of the perceived aggression or the tortured “RICKY!” screech, it’s more his approach to layering, to cutting and pasting and micro-editing the drum work that becomes so shocking or confrontational. That sense of an aural threat translated into track titles like ‘R.I.P’, ‘Single Finga Killa’, ‘Stick Em Up’ and ‘Sound Murderer’ which was extrapolated by Mu as the perfect phrase to encapsulate a collection of his early music. 

Sharing a lot of the energy and complexity of the Planet Mu roster’s output, Remarc’s brazen and broken brew of beats and breaks found the perfect kinship with the label. Being just as manic and as layered as a lot of the music they're known for, it makes complete sense that the label would call upon Remarc to represent jungle to the fullest and appear on a bill with Luke Vibert, Neil Landstrumm, Ital and Ital Tek a week on Friday.

"Oh Oh, an onomatopoeic impression of the bass variation sound just before the drop, is a slightly uncomfortable juxtaposition of a cowboy epos intro (the vocals are sung by Thijs) and a huge bass sound in a stuttering groove. Even though we did try to make it sound as big as possible, it remains a comical tune in spirit.

We also recorded a broken toy keyboard for the outro."

We are pleased to welcome Survival & Silent Witness back to Dispatch for their next release, entitled the ‘Trust No One EP’. Featuring two incredible new tracks from the duo, the EP also includes remixes of 2013 “In From The Wild” album track, ‘Fletcher’. 

Rolling it out with decisive force and in signature style from the duo, two original tracks from Survival & Silent Witness kick off the EP. 

With a surge in energy capable of causing nothing short of carnage on the dancefloor, ‘Trust No One’ sets things off, in a clamoring exchange between mechanical entities. 

Building the intro in merciless, near apocalyptic fashion, ‘Cutter’ is the next to follow on the EP, as resounding low ends terrorize irrefutably beneath tightly chopped breaks.

Emerging from our ‘Fletcher’ remix competition as the overall winner, Slovakian based Minor Rain comes correct with a fantastically balanced re-work, retaining the musicality of the original, echoing the emotions over a dark, more stripped back core. 

Although only intending to release one winner, we had no choice but to select two runner-up submissions to be released in addition, upon hearing an array of top quality entries, with a thunderous re-fix by Depth Mode and a gritty 140 flip from Diecast.

BTK, Maztek & Optiv - Footprint

This track pretty much explains itself. The name doesn't stand for anything, it is just 'Simple' with the vowels removed, hence the vocal sample. This one was inspired by the minimal era that came around a few years ago, old Rockwell, Icicle, Amoss, and Octane & DLR tracks that were bare bones, but not. They had all the needed to have, and that's something that's extremely hard to do nowadays without sounding empty.

For those who don't know, Bizzy B's Brain label was one of the most futuristic in the early days when hardcore was becoming jungle. From 92-94 they released some of the best junglistic'ardcore there was. Classics like Darkness, Weekend, Dubplate Wars, 2 Dope ep, and artists like TDK whose TOG sublabel was a peak of amen choppage). Brain also put out the debut releases of Marc Caro (Technical Itch), Peshay and DJ Zinc (in the Swift and Zinc eps) and Slammin' Vinyl's Mike Slammer and Red Alert's first 2 releases. Bizzy also released many a classic on other labels such as Slowjam & DarkIII on Whitehouse, Stamina and Raw Dogs Relik on Suburban Base and many more. He's recently been producing 2-step and Breaks with his Undercover Agents label and still releases drum'n'bass under "Warped Science" (latest being 'After F' on Charge with DJ Fresh on the same ep).
