A beloved East Village hot spot from early ‘87 to the bitter end of 1992, downtown video nightclub SorryClubTV closed its doors nearly thirty years ago on an unusually mild mid-December Sunday morning. Not the first New York club to incorporate video screens into the club experience (perpetual rival The Ritz made it there first), SorryClubTV boasted an impressive 33.3' screen and a projector which cost an undisclosed amount (“less than $200k, more than The Ritz’s”). This proved to be a burdensome and frankly confusing investment for the club whose regular crowd was clearly more interested in dancing than watching music videos on TV. Despite the routinely packed dance floor and legion of devoted dancers, SorryClubTV’s owners soon found themselves in over their heads, unable to see a return on investment anytime before the new millennium. So when presented with the opportunity at a way out, the owners didn't think before selling the club and the Third Ave building that housed it, leading to the club's rather abrupt end and subsequent conversion into a group of offices and studios for a local film production house specializing in industrial films and tri-state area tv commercials. 

The night before the club's final morning, longtime resident boxofbox took the decks one last time; delivering a six hour set that stretched well into the morning hours, going a full two hours past the city’s legal closing time, and playing record after record to deliver their final love letter to the sweat-packed floor of revelers that called the club home. Thought to be lost to time -- a new trove of DAT tapes containing the complete soundboard recording of that legendary night were recently unearthed from a box found deep within a storage closet in the long dilapidated and recently shuttered subway station record shop MTA TRAX which operated on the Northeast side of Times Square - 42nd St. station for the better part of the last forty odd years. boxofbox’s DATs contain a tracklist that is simply stacked with some of the greatest dance hits from the era, where radio-candied pop hits meshed with sultry rnb and the emergent sound of new jack swing, as well as some early signals of the rave era to come as it was taking shape.

Lawrence S. Williams Jr., better known as L.A. Williams, is an American DJ and producer from Chicago. Founder of the label Chisel, producer of over 27 releases, he has an idiosyncratic take to rhythms, sounds and grooves. 

As a huge fan, both impressed and beguiled, I wanted to shine a light on him. I still am often tripped up trying to blend his tracks while D'Jaying and fit them in a mix soooooooo I had to make this all L.A. mix ᏊˊꈊˋᏊ I spent the last few months collecting nearly all his releases on Discogs to use for the mix; a lot isn't available digitally, and it just felt right. 

I think the best way to hear his unique world and sound is via a tour of his various sides and styles, weaving and roiling, building and bubbling, jacking and smacking.
