Inspired by the flora and fauna of our planet, Sign Libra’s productions invoke lush, magical dreamscapes. In 2016 the Latvian RBMA alumna released her ‘Closer to the Equator’ EP digitally via Sounds of the Dawn and now the excellent French label Antinote is blessing us with a physical version of the record. We’re excited to host the second track from the EP, entitled “Mantodea vs. Furcifer Pardalis,” a beautiful concoction that Sign Libra also played for us in the participant introduction round at the 2016 Academy in Montréal. Since she provided us with an evocative description of her own track, we can’t help but to share that with you as well in full:

“Living in trees and bushes, animals must hide themselves well from predators and be skillful hunters. One of such masters of ambush and mimicry is the praying mantis. Well camouflaged and lighting up quickly, this insect is a highly efficient predator, but it has a worthy enemy – the panther chameleon. Its camouflage is exceptional because it can change skin colour to match its surroundings. During the hunt the chameleon’s eyes move independently to spot prey. It creeps towards its victim until it unleashes a super weapon – its tongue, which shoots out at a speed of 15 meters per second and not only hits but grasps its target…”

Sign Libra’s ‘Closer to the Equator’ EP is out on vinyl February 19th via Antinote.

‘Tunnels’ begins with a flurry of drums before being enveloped by sub-bass pressure, like stepping directly into a basement club in full flow. As the track climaxes, saxophones sweep the air like green-spoked lasers overhead, creating a contrast of pinpoint clarity against the background atmosphere. Though sonically well outside Bristol’s dubstep legacy, it accurately portrays the smudged perception of a peak time rave. On the flip, we find the more introverted 'First Light', wherein the group downshift from the buzz of a bustling room to the hum of one’s head as dawn breaks. It is a moment of spacious solitude shared only, as Cunningham pictures it, with “swans fighting over polystyrene chip boxes” in the canal below.

One of the most respected labels in the underground scene, 5 years of hard work have seen the raw lobster become king of the ocean. Lobster Theremin first burst onto the scene back in 2013, earlier this year saw them reach the milestone of release number 50 with an EP from Route 8. Two sub-labels have been born with the lobster family the first coming as early as 2013 in the shape of Distant Hawaii focusing on dreamier summertime sounds, then the following year introducing us to mörk with a sound more similar to its parent. 3 successful labels, a record store and distribution outlet – a label boss’ dream. The calibre of artists they have attracted is nothing short of amazing Palms Trax, Ross From Friends and DJ Seinfeld to name a few.

Focusing more on Distant Hawaii, who’s releases include lofi cult favourite Talk To Me You’ll Understand by Ross From Friends – a place where releases always impress me and continue to do so with their latest EP. Manchester’s Ciggy De La Noche makes him label debut with his  4-track Strictly Come Dancing EP. Each track is special in its own way, dreamy synths play throughout the release with influences from Jazz and Detroit tying them nicely together. Inertia is perhaps our favourite on the EP, mesmerising drum work drives the track as the warm synth and bass take the track to a whole new level. HAWAII014 is a must for any record bag, don’t sleep on this one! Out on October 5th.

Broken beat and jazz keys sound tasty! Here's your head chef, Fred Bwelle AKA Neue Grafik. The friendly-faced Parisian has been brewing quite the rep of late, travelling broadly (Europe/Australia) with the likes of Bradley Zero and Prequel as well as dropping records via Rhythm Section, 22a and Wolf Music.

With quite the cocktail of influences to call on, be it his African heritage, French youth or big love of London sounds, Grafik has many a tale to tell. The latest body of work, 'I Miss Something / Bed Stuy's Mood' is one lovely hybrid, featuring some choice remixes from Danvers, EVM 128, NameBrandSound and Xtra Brux. Brought to us by the crew at CoOP Presents, Fred's next pass, is in a word...tight! As N.G explains 'This EP is a personal vision of the broken beat scene and my love for that. A meeting with artists who build my own taste, with friends keeping the same vibrancy and desire for this music'.

The title track 'I Miss Something', is a gorgeous breeze. Immediately, we're introduced to some of the crispiest snares ever programmed, along with a peppering of synthesized keys and dulcet piano. You've arranged to meet the girl of your dreams at your favourite jazz bar, you enter, there she sits looking flawless. It's this tune that's spilling from the speakers. Thanks be to you Neue Grafik.
