The Reclamation Project

The Reclamation Project is a site based archival sound work and installation that investigates
preservation and design at the intersection of inheritance and stewardship- on the grounds
of the 1960s constructed tropical modern Scott House. This installation will show exclusively
at the Scott House for Architecture Is A Party and then live as an audio assemblage NFT
where all participants from the party and main interviewees will hold the legacy of this
conversation on the block chain.
The audio archive plays a continual loop of four voices: Sydney Quartey (grandson of Madam
Scott), Dominique Petit Frère (Scott House Project Lead), Mr. David (18 yr Gardener) and
Maxwell (2 year Security Guard) as they share personal narratives of their relationship with the
architectural masterpiece.
The wood paneling, slatted wings and multi-crossed ventilation of the Scott House take a
modernist design approach that appreciates, preserves and adapts to the tropical climate of
Accra. Intentionally designed methods of cooling, shade and escapism have offered a refuge
to the multi generational Scott family since ‘61. A replica of the home was built on the
grounds years later expanding the capacity of the design to house more people, hold more
dinners, and offer more space.
Like the home, the Scott Family has adapted to its environment, holding and preserving the
natural changes that come with familyhood. From the hands of Kenneth Scott, to the
maintenance of Madam Scott and now to the responsibility of the younger descendant; what
has been inherited expects preservation of the old in a rapidly changing Accra environment.
The Scott house has inadvertently created three archetypes: The Stewards, The Futurists and
The Madam. This archival installation weaves together these complicating narratives and
relationships to the house, prompting questions about lineage, change and legacy.

This is the soundscape for 'a divination of enjoyment: extended play (EP) vol. 3 for this immersive exhibition at The Mix Design Hub December 15 - December 29th 2023 in Osu - Accra, Ghana. This 12 min one track EP was produced by nii.a.k, Fritzwa, and Obi Nnani. It includes sounds of the oceanside, forest, and streets of Accra alongside the traditional gyli from the northern region of Ghana of the Lobi people. All sounds recorded on an iPhone 11 including the kpanlogo drums, horns, agogo, shekere instruments featuring Universal Wonderful Street Academy.

On the occasion of Cayman Carnival in July 2024, Wild Grass Research Practice presented an immersive sonic installation within The Duho Pavilion, exploring the role of sound in preserving lost, undocumented, and future memories. The studio applied its sonic work within the Duho as a fermentation process, layering the frequencies of the Neotropic landscape to capture the tempo created by the natural and built environments, living and more-than-living elements, archival sounds, and elements of the Caymans. The sound installation transformed The Duho Pavilion into a place of worship and reflection, allowing listeners to connect with the spirit of the island.

The installation featured a layered immersive sound mangrove, archiving field recordings from the island's public and private life—its animals, vegetation, coastlines, vistas, public spaces, memories, and dreams. The work reflected the visible and invisible interconnected ecosystems of the Caymans, shaped by both historical and natural forces. It honored Taino deities, endangered endemic plant life, and the unrecorded stories of historical and future passersby. The sonic opening was marked by an intimate ceremonial movement performed by Chris Emile, paying tribute to the ruptures of culture, natural environment, and history within the Cayman landscape.

Conceptually, the sonic work arranged multiple standing speakers tucked between the natural landscape to create a choral effect. Visitors were invited to move between the speakers to listen to specific sounds or to be enveloped by the entire ensemble. The speaker setup paid homage to the sounds as gods in the space. The installation was temporarily housed within The Duho and explored relocation within the Palm Heights property and residency archive.

Jewish Listening: A Reckoning

Josh Kun

In his public lecture, “Jewish Listening: A Reckoning”-- reimagined as a radio essay -- Kun will reflect on a lifetime of listening to music and explore what it means to be a Jewish listener, what it means to listen “as a Jew.” In particular, he will re-visit writing from earlier in his career on the history of Jewish-American music in the context of contemporary debates across Israel and Palestine. Can listening change the meanings of Jewishness? How does music interrupt the equivalencies of identity? What happens when a “Jewish” listener is immersed in the music of Palestine? What new music, what new musical positions, emerge?
