The tail of aviation dies, 
As engines roar and cough.
Vapor trails once crossed the skies 
But here’s the last take off 
 I stare out of my window 
And my heart sinks like the moon

While the cabin’s like a tomb

We know the skies are danger now 
They had to legislate
The flights are full of terror gusts
 So wings they bend and break
But let’s remember odysseys 
Romantic wanderlust
As engines start their shrieking now 
As though they speak for us

And which asylum beckons me 
Now that we are broke
A girl on Spanish beaches taunts
Those years were full of hope
Now feel the nose start dipping down
Towards an aerodrome

- I had written quite a few poems and I took this one out and rewrote it and set it to music. 
It is a hymn to love, the love that was before, during and especially after, because love is universal and without limits, for eternity.

- J'avais écrit pas mal de poèmes et j'ai pris celui-là, je l'ai réécrit et je l'ai mis en musique. 
C'est un hymne à l'amour, l'amour qui était avant, pendant et surtout après, car l'amour est universel et sans limites, pour l'éternité.

My grandmother kisses
as if bombs are bursting in the backyard,
where mint and jasmine lace their perfumes
through the kitchen window,
as if somewhere, a body is falling apart
and flames are making their way back
through the intricacies of a young boy’s thigh,
as if to walk out the door, your torso
would dance from exit wounds.
When my grandmother kisses, there would be
no flashy smooching, no western music
of pursed lips, she kisses as if to breathe
you inside her, nose pressed to cheek
so that your scent is relearned
and your sweat pearls into drops of gold
inside her lungs, as if while she holds you
death also, is clutching your wrist.

Over the past few years, I’ve discovered several unique and delightful souls in our community; and the song I get to share today is my first collaboration with one of my favorite Soundcloud troubadours, Tanisha Jackland (Lady of Fire Poetry - https://soundcloud.com/ladyofire, https://ladyoffirepoetry.bandcamp.com/).

I messaged her a few months ago, hoping for a little inspirational pointer to one of her favorite open collab offerings. And to my great surprise and excitement, she offered to create something entirely new for the project. In addition, she introduced me to her muse for this particular piece, Emily Levine. Needless to say, Emily will be the subject for this write-up (so thanks, Tanisha… for that introduction; and for getting to create this song with you. I had a lot of fun with this one). :)

So who was Emily Levine? Emily started her career in 1977 as a stand-up comedian. But the world wasn’t ready to take female comedians seriously, so in 1980 she became a television writer and producer. Over the next decade, she worked on intelligent sitcoms, including ‘Designing Women’ and ‘Love and War’; and comedy pilots for CBS, NBC, ABC and HBO.

Despite an admirable career as a Screenwriter, Emily’s largest transformation came in the form of a tumor found on her pituitary gland. 

Before the diagnosis, she began experiencing a wide array of symptoms like extreme fatigue, brain fog, osteoarthritis, carpel tunnel, acromegaly (where your extremities grow abnormally large) and a lack of interest in the activities she enjoyed. 

Eventually, the tumor was discovered and successfully removed. But during her illness and recovery she began to explore more modern, scientific ideologies. This is where she had some of her greatest life epiphanies; my personal favorite being the realization that we need to evolve our thinking from Newton’s Universe to the Universe of Relativity, Chaos Theory and Quantum Physics. 

Here’s her basic formula. The Newtonian Universe is one of ‘either/or’; either this is true or that is true, but both can’t be true. If I’m right, you must be wrong. It’s very linear, black and white thinking; and it’s the hurdle that the human race can’t seem to get past.

But if you give Quantum Physics a spin, the formula becomes ‘and-and-and’ (notice the dashes rather than slashes). For example, light can be a wave and a particle, depending on how you look at it. I can be right, and you can be right, depending on how we look at it. That single idea transforms very rigid, absolute thinking (off/on, right/wrong) into something far my dynamic and probability based. It gives the human race the breathing room we need to help us solve our current polarizations; a beautiful opportunity for transforming the old paradigm into something that helps us evolve our thinking and move forward as a species.
