Stewards of British Indie Rock, Blah Blah Blah galvanizes the allure of Manchesters heyday from the peak of Factory Records, the energy of the Hacienda to the ground-swelling introduction of the Smiths.

With musical-wherewithal spanning far broader than that of any revivalist band, Blah Blah Blah alternatively develops upon the sounds of post-punk, new wave and synth-pop into their own brand of danceable indie-rock.

Blah Blah Blah delivers crisp, airy vocals that spiral around carefully crafted layers of guitars and keys, all tightly held by up-tempo drums and dance-oriented bass lines. Pioneering the direction of British Indie-style rock, this underground sensation continually wins over hearts for their emotively driving, and upbeat songs that playfully strike a balance between organic instruments and electronic elements.

Working under the name Craft Spells, Stockton, Calif.'s Justin Vallesteros makes music for bedsitters who dream about being social. Though often addressed to a love interest either real or imagined, Idle Labor is above all a lonely album that rarely betrays its origin as a solo project. Sonically it recalls Wild Nothing it the way it mines a large swath of 1980s synth pop, but its clear emotional tenor gives it a distinguishing perspective and personality.
Idle Labor exists in a time frame best described by the title of its ebullient centerpiece-- "After the Moment". These are sketches of romantic problems and solutions with the wounds still fresh and the thoughts uncensored. Taken as a whole, it could be read as a narrative following Vallesteros from heartbreak to infatuation and back, a few months' worth of romantic uncertainty boiled down to a taut and hooky album.
In a maundering yearn somewhere between Jens Lekman and Ian Curtis, Vallesteros introduces himself as a lovelorn melodramatist over sunstroked, near-Balearic pop. But as the narrative begins to hint at physical contact, the music works in lockstep, and Vallestreros builds tracks more as a dance producer than a singer-songwriter. And that's where he hits his stride-- while his vocals remain a central fixture, the post-punk mordancy is softened by locomotive arrangements that stack synth pads, ringing guitar, and primitive drum programming.
"Party Talk" starts a mid-album mini-suite with Vallesteros as a nebbishy Woody Allen character trying to decode a mutual romantic connection from casual conversation. But he leaps forward during the upbeat "From the Morning Heat", and by the fantastic morning-after celebration "After the Moment", something has apparently clicked; Vallesteros repeats the chorus as if he knows it's the best he's written.
The emotional high is predictably short-lived, and even within its brief half-hour runtime, more than a few of the melodies take detours and left turns. "The Fog Rose High" has the feel of a gothier Beach Fossils, while the anodyne dream-pop scruff of "You Should Close the Door" could have been a Radio Dept. B-side. But as with so many bedroom auteurs' debuts, it's tough to separate the creation from the creator, and Idle Labor shows the promise of a precocious songwriter who isn't claiming to have anything totally figured out just yet.

In a time when most artists spend the bulk of their energy trying to brainstorm over clever band names and contrived marketing schemes, it's refreshing to see a group that picks honesty over hyperbole. With that very notion in mind, the members in Chicago's beloved Blah Blah Blah, decided long ago that the music is what matters the most. And who can blame them? With a name like that, you better make damn sure that your music is better than just good enough.

Comprised of two Iowa friends and two Chicago musicians, the midwest quartet has gone through various incarnations but finally found their footing in 2010 after being voted one of the Tribune's next bands on the verge of breaking BIG. Since championing the genre of ballroom rock, the band continually wins over the hearts of fans worldwide for their emotionally-driven yet upbeat songs that playfully strike a balance between the alternative and organic. With a revitalized sense of vibrance and a newly recorded EP on the horizon this summer, it's not hard to see why the band is so optimistic about the next chapter of its career.

For the new project, Thank You, Thank You, the band decided to ditch the ease of digital and embrace the techniques of yester-year. By recording the entire EP in analog onto tape, they convincingly proved the old adage that sometimes you have to take a step back in order to truly move forward. With the help of music vets, like producer Matt Walker (Morrissey, Smashing Pumpkins) and engineer Sean O'Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Motion City Soundtrack, Less than Jake), the new recordings serve as a magnum opus for the band and a beacon of hope for the burgeoning indie music scene.
