Still, Let Us Live By The Moon In Ecstasy

Mischa Blanos is a Bucharest-based composer with a new record on InFiné. Actually, the record is a debut score for this Romanian-Russian pianist, which is created for Alex Bogdan's adaption of the play, The Bald Soprano. Although the track I'm premiering for you today is a pure solo-piano piece, the rest of the music on the soundtrack includes minimal electronics, complex processing, and cinematic textures which include orchestral treatments. The play is "an absurdist exploration of the futility of communication," and as a result, Blanos' music reflects the emotional state of the characters as "communication between them slowly dissolves into abstraction." The result is both, a melodic expression of the intricate harmonies, and the stripped-down dissonance, complimenting each other with tension before the resolve. This is already his fourth record for the label, following on last year's City Jungle (2021), as the French imprint continues to expand its discography and roster with contemporary classical composers and electronica collaborations (see Vanessa Wagner, Gaspar Claus and Secrets Of Elements), so you know that my ears are attuned.

An ode to the late Nick Talbot (Gravenhurst)

I first discovered Gravenhurst back in 2004 while exhausting the last of my pizza-serving paycheck at my local record store, Stinkweeds in Tempe, AZ. As I was thumbing through new releases, eerie, atmospheric-folk began to play over the store’s sound system. When Nick’s voice emerged from the fog, I was hooked. I purchased Flashlight Seasons that day and immediately felt as if I was let in on a secret. I listened to that album incessantly. To make extra money during this time I began to DJ weddings, mitzvahs and private parties.  The nights were long and the playlists were pre-chosen by the clients. When I climbed into my ’86 Honda Civic (nicknamed “the roller skate”) at the end of the night all I wanted to do was to cleanse my ears with Nick’s beautiful, intimate songs. His music was my companion; something I could count on when I was lonely. Although I never got a chance to see Nick perform or meet him in person, I felt like through his songs I knew him intimately.

Nick passed away a year ago today. At the time I coped with the tragic news by recording one of my favorite songs of his, “The Diver”. And while my version could never hold a light to the original, I recorded it with great sincerity and sorrow. I learned later that Nick had suffered from the seizure-causing disorder epilepsy, a disorder my mother also suffers from. That’s why I’m releasing the cover as a pay-what-you-want digital download via Bandcamp with 100% of the proceeds going to the http://www.epilepsysociety.org.uk/, the leading provider of epilepsy services in the UK though research, awareness campaigns, info. resources and expert care. Blair Coron is a musician and poet from Springfield, a small village in Fife, Scotland. His quiet and intimate music blends modern classical, storytelling and traditional melodies, with themes of nature, people, time and place. Through music, words and cinematography, Coron's primary intention is to create enchanting atmospheres that sets course for introspection and connection to the landscapes surrounding us.

After the success of his debut album ‘On The Nature of Things’, Coron recently released his second album and accompanying film ‘Cairn', in collaboration with the School of Scottish Studies Archives and National Trust for Scotland and funded by Creative Scotland. It is a celebration of Scottish heritage, a thank you to all it has given so far, containing new music set to archival interviews of those living in the Highlands and Islands during the early 20th century discussing local legends, childhood reminiscences and traditions long forgotten.

Following this, he has been further commissioned by Edinburgh University and the School of Scottish Studies Archives to help curate a new exhibition made to enhance viewers' experiences and connections to visual and audio materials from the Scottish Archives. This is 'A Carrying Stream', situated at 30 George Square, Edinburgh and open until September 30th.

The music for this was also released separately as an EP on August 18th
