By Gregorian measurements, I turned 30 years old today. Time only means what you make of it, so I made a 3 hour mix with 40 tracks that have meant a lot to me over the last year. I’ve heard people talk about “finding” themselves, and I never fully understood what they meant. But I guess that’s what I had to do. I had to see what I was made of. My entire life, I’ve derived my identity and sense of self from somewhere outside myself — a certain heritage, a certain religion, various sports teams and social cliques, several genres of music and career paths, many geographical regions, etc. And maybe I didn’t know why at the time, but I see now that I had to learn to define my self independently of all that. I underestimated how challenging it would be mentally, emotional, and even physically. But spiritually, I knew if I didn’t start then, I’d cease to exist outside of these external and superficial constructs. So here I am. There’s an infinite road ahead, but I’ve learned to love the journey. And I guess that’s what this mix sounds like.
