A remix of Postmodern Jukebox's remix of Rhianna's song 'Only girl in the world'. I took some of the piano elements and the usable vocals from their version for this.

The story I made for this song is that a man goes to a jazz bar and doesn't enjoy it. He then zones in and out during songs, making up his own music in his head as a sort of entertainment. I would like to state that I quite enjoy jazz bars and that this is just an idea. It was going to be a full blown album, but unfortunately I have run out of time to make the rest of it in the foreseeable future.

I think the hardest thing about this track was working with highly swung rhythms and trying to make them work with the track I was remixing. There was a lot of masking of straight rhythms in favor of swing. I liked the jazz vibe with the drums as it inspired me to work a lot more with the rhythms of snares and be a bit more experimental / adventurous. I didn't feel bound to any sort of structure, not that I should when I'm making music or try to be normally, but I think every producer does to some extent, even if it's only small.

I really enjoyed making the soundscapes for this, so working with the numerous clap tracks, voice tracks, and so on. Panning different tracks and making sound real was a challenge, not that I think I pulled it off entirely, but I did OK. I highly recommend www.freesound.org to anyone looking for user submitted recordings of sounds. A brilliant and free resource! 

I wrote some of the piano parts in this and all of the rhodes. I tried to match the piano sound of the remix to my vst piano, and this was a challenge and a half. If you listen carefully, well not even carefully (it's pretty damn obvious - especially in the solo), you can tell which is which.

Here is the Seth Troxler remix of the track 'I Try To Talk To You' which is co-written by the excellent John Grant. The track is taken from the album 'The Feast Of The Broken Heart' which was released on the 26th May.

The first vocal collaboration of the new album's recording sessions, John's sexy tomcat voice and lyrical ability for translating hardship into elegance lent themselves greatly to the new album.

Andy Butler explains: "I asked John to dig deep with his lyrical contribution. I had no idea he would dig so deep. He tackled the story of becoming HIV positive, and while I mentioned to him that he did not need to go there if he was not comfortable, in that beautifully punky, spirited and courageous way he has about him, he told me that was what the song was going to be about. What came of it is an elegant song featuring John singing and playing his heart out.”

'I Try To Talk To You' was released with remixes on the 9th June.
