When it comes to these SoundCloud exclusive Interbay tracks, I always reserve the right to revisit them again later--when I am more skilled, when I have better ideas, when I'm not concentrating on producing a new track every single day and have reason--or assistance--in making each track the best it could possibly be.  

I think that THIS is one of those tracks--and yet, I still believe what this song is about, I believe that the sentiments match the music, and that the music is well produced.  

The thing I might change, some day, would be how "on the nose" this is...and relying on spoken word, instead of singing it myself (I still believe that this will start happening more often...soon--though, I've been saying that for 452 straight days.)  

As it is, this is a slice of epic pop pie.  It's got everything.  If you're not used to my neurodivergent brain creating music that is in danger of giving the listener whiplash with how genres can get swapped without warning, this is a good place to understand what I mean by that.  

In "Some Grand Gesture," you'll get everything (even a garden!)  There's synths, there's clean guitar, there's an orchestra, there are dance beats, there's a wobbly base...hell, there's even an Angus Young-style guitar riff (spoilers, sorry.)  All in service of a narrative that tries to revisit my youthful enthusiasm and faith in pop culture through my world weary eyes.  

It should work.  

And yet, I feel like I've let the music down by tying the anchor of this premise around it's legs.  This track existed before I started posting here on SoundCloud, back where I posted music videos of every new song over on Facebook (and needing to create music videos slowed down the progress of things, and soon there was a backlog of music waiting to pass through the bottleneck of video production...which is why I switched to music only posts here on SoundCloud.)  

Like many of these reclaimed from that one cabinet in The Vault tracks, this was an instrumental--but I don't let myself post instrumentals here on SoundCloud.  So it sat while I tried to figure out a lyric that would fit with a rather bombastic piece of no-rules song arrangement.  

The track had been calleld "Some Grand Gesture" right from the start, so I worked off of that.  And, I have experience with the romantic grand gesture.  I thought that was what we were supposed to do!  I have had some minor successes and at least one Duckie-worthy giant flop.  

And, as much as I love Lloyd Dobler holding up a boombox outside the window of Diane Court, I now recognize how creepy and stalkerish that would be in real life--and I had treated it as some sort of life lesson.  (I also don't think it would have worked, as John Cusack played a Fishbone song while filming the scene--they replaced it with Peter Gabriel in post--and I'm not sure Ione Skye would have fallen for that...though she did fall for Anthony Kiedas, so...  

Maybe I'm just being cynical?  And old.    

I still like this version of this track, or I wouldn't post it.  (Yes, there IS some quality control at Phantom Laboratories West.)  Give it a listen and let me know what you think!

I wanted to do something relating to the new incredible Smash bros Direct this week, but I had family over and only had time to finish up my project that I already had on the go from earlier! This isn't to undersell A Hat In Time in the slightest! If you have not played this indie, what are you waiting for? The soundtrack is fantastic, and that remains true for the Mario Sunshine-esc time rift levels in the game that feature this little ditty. Everything about these levels make me happy, from the colour scheme, the simplicity in design, the bubbles that float off of your character as if you were underwater. OH, and the music too!
