All Night Long DJ set at Hare & Hounds, Birmingham 13th August 2021

As part of RA2122, our ongoing celebration of 21 years of club culture, we'll be featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties or clubs most important to their lives in dance music. 

The first time we featured DJ Nobu on the RA Podcast, over ten years ago, we called him "one of Japan's best DJs." In hindsight, i think we can all agree that the country qualifier is no longer necessary: he's one of the world's best DJs, bar none. An absolute master at curating and mixing techno, Nobu has helped to inspire a Japanese school of techno that is psychedelic, hypnotic and often very pretty, without losing the genre's oomph or edge. And he's more popular than ever around the world, playing some of the best parties and clubs in pretty much any country or city you could name.

But DJ Nobu's roots and heart are close to home. Frustrated with techno in the Japanese capitol, he created his own party in his neighbouring hometown, Chiba, where nightlife was less pretentious and the vibe was a little looser. Future Terror quickly became known as one of Japan's premiere techno parties, and paved the way not only for Nobu himself, but many other Japanese DJs who Nobu and his later partner Haruka gave the chance to shine. The party also recently celebrated its landmark 20th anniversary with its first-ever party in London.

This mix is a direct tribute and encapsulation of Future Terror, what Nobu calls a "condensed story" of the series focusing on the more outré elements at the fore—an "awareness of techno" with plenty of more leftfield tracks thrown in. What follows might be a little gentler than you'd expect from Nobu, but it's all top-tier techno mixed with an expert hand.

With two major milestones upon us today, we're fortunate enough to be celebrating with one of the finest in electronic music. A new year is upon us and today we also reach a major podcast milestone, to celebrate we welcome none other than contemporary techno legend, DJ Nobu for MNMT 400.

With decades of experience and as founder of both acclaimed party ‘Future Terror’ and record label ‘Bitta’, DJ Nobu has slowly but surely turned from being one of Japan's finest, to one of the world’s most in demand selectors. A great friend of Monument who delivered an incredible closing set at our first ever Monument City Festival in 2023, we couldn’t be happier to be marking the occasion with him. 

For this very special mix Nobu presents a stunning introspective excursion through electronica and deeper shades to celebrate the two milestones.

If you know, you know: Mr. G is one of dance music’s true originals. From the early days in the legendary KCC crew and his influential work as half of The Advent, to decades of solo output under his own name, Colin McBean has never strayed from his roots. With releases on Rekids, Moods ‘n’ Grooves, Defected, and his own long-running Phoenix G imprint, his raw, bass-heavy electronic-tech-funk sound has moved floors and minds all over the world.

Now, for one of his rare mixtape appearances, we’re honored to share this special vinyl-only piece from his archive.

Recorded on two Technics 1210's and a Rane MP2015 mixer and mixed down to CD with added weight, the mix had been sleeping for years until Mr. G pressed play and surprised even himself. It’s meditative, deep, and packed with the personality you only get when the machines are running hot. It captures the raw energy, honesty, and unmistakable feel that only Mr. G can deliver: just pure groove, and even a cheeky cable cut halfway through that adds to the charm.

It’s not often he shares this side, so we’re grateful he let us dig it out. For us, it’s a perfect snapshot of where he comes from and what he still brings to the table today. A true original.

DeFeKT(aka Matthew Flanagan) has been a tireless advocate of true electro and techno over the last number of years, steadily honing his hardware based sound that has earned him admirers all through the electronic music community. DeFeKT released a 8 track mini album in 2010 which gained great support from Dave Clarke. Since then a slew of 12″ Eps and remix’s have emerged under the DeFeKT, ESS and Tinfoil guise with Sunil sharpe on labels like Combat recordings, Solar One Music, AC Records, Cultivated electronics, Signal Code,Electronic Explorations, Convex industries, Komisch, Boys Noise Records . His eager abuse of analog drum machines and modular synths is a breath of fresh air in today’s laptop dominated scene.

As one of house and techno's most accomplished and technically skilled selectors, DJ Deep's encyclopaedic understanding of the genres has kept him busy on the scene for more than twenty years, building up a reputation that's beyond reproach. From his early days as a resident DJ for Laurent Garnier’s legendary “Wake Up” parties at Rex Club to forming the careers of artists such as Francois X through his  Deeply Rooted label, his influence runs deep. As well as an accomplished producer, he has regularly collaborated with Roman Poncet for Tresor. His newest release For The Love Of Kaoz finds himself on Kerri Chandler's label, a friendship that's equally lasted twenty or so odd years. Following on from a Q&A we had with him last year before Gottwood, we caught up with Cyril for a more in depth chat. Topics this time include the strict club policies in Paris twenty years ago, the seminal Wake Up parties with Laurent Garnier, and how he feels techno is connecting with today's audience. The mix he's done for us, coming in at Truancy Volume 190, is a barrage of new music bursting at the seams featuring the likes of Floorplan, that amazing Money Morning record on Acting Press and Mike Dunn's latest 12".
