London-based DJ and producer Parris first cut his teeth at the legendary events series FWD>>, which mainly catered to the sounds of grime and dubstep. Taking inspiration from these musical roots, but adding his own special twist, Parris’s own, bass-focused musical creations have since been picked up by such labels as The Trilogy Tapes, Idle Hands, Tempa and Hemlock in recent years, as well as rock-solid collaborative release on CANUFEELTHESUNONYRBACK with Call Super.

Parris has been on our radar here at Phonica for quite some time, and ever since he came and performed for us at our 2019 Record Store Day event we have been interested in getting a dedicated mix recording from him. So, with that in mind, we thought he would make for a perfect addition to our Off The Record Mix Series. His mix below is just short of one hour and slips and slides through all kinds of genres – from hazy hip-hop and R&B to obscure rock and pop.

Wayne Goodlitt sets aside his Roska moniker and takes up his Bakongo alter-ego for a Bleep mix which injects a dark edge into the UK Funky sound that he has become synonymous with. Across the mix the listener is led through a whirlwind of tuned drums, throbbing low-end and booming bass drums. Drum-line percussion arrangements abound, often wedded to dembow or broken-beat kick patterns but sometimes left to run over four-to-the-floor stompers. In addition to tunes from Nightwave, T Williams and Karizma - the latter of who’s aptly-entitled shuffler ‘Strings Emotional’ closes out the mix - we are also treated to a glut of Bakongo-produced heat throughout. This one’s a power hour for sure.

Hailing from Rotterdam, Black Cadmium is the moniker of DJs, producers and radio hosts Joginda Macnack and Jermaine Richards.

Drawing influence from acid, techno and electro, and the London to Detroit connection, the pair have already built a solid discography over the last year or two, finding homes on the likes of Ovum Recordings, Vault Wax and more recently Carista's United Identities and Violet's Naïve imprint.

For their 'Shine A Light On' mix they share music from their favourite artists and labels, including Nous'Klaer, Omnidisc, Jaye Sound and Interplanetary Criminal, as well as a handul of the labels they've previously released music on. A deep, cosmic ride through squelchy 303s, cavernous electro and euphoric techno, it's clear that Black Cadmium have arrived and we'll be seeing much more of them in the future...

Black Cadmium: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

Glasgow-based DJ isora is in charge of this week’s Rhythmic Culture podcast. isora did study violin for 10 years at the Conservatory of Music in Italy and this led her to a vision of life that cannot be considered the same without music. Inspired by electronic and techno music after moving to Glasgow, her goal is to let people not just listening but also feeling and living her mixes as a proper experience.

Her mix is a percussive madness that starts off with an organic feel, but slowly is bleeding in thumping basses that will last to the end of the set leaving you paranoid, yet excited for what is coming next.

My housing situation was in flux and mind/patience thoroughly worn down from a year of society's hyper performative fixation on an always present Black struggle (made more dire by a pandemic). With the ancient origins of this holiday marking transition and a collision of existential planes I wanted to play from within my situation in that same manner as a means of closing the door on it in my own way. I wholeheartedly believe 'the only way out is through' and with this drummy widening gyre I wanted to present an illusive path..."
