Mesh Series 016: Kinn

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, and what they listen to.

The mix extracts highlights from Kinn's debut album, Anamnesis Landscape, and expands on his favoured themes and aesthetics of the macabre, presented at times with a tongue in cheek “Dread turned up all the way to 11” fashion.

Using extracts of dialogue, these fragmented conversations evoke a subjective narrative, each monologue lingers in the imagination of the listener as they are juxtaposed or mirrored by the brooding drones and fleeting moments of respite. Thanks again to Kinn for contributing to this months series.

"Jack Aldridge (who took the photo) is one of my oldest friends, someone I haven’t seen in person in a very long time due to the pandemic. For this reason I asked him to work with me on “something” around the same time this mix for Mesh came about Whilst I was putting the final touches to the mix I asked him to send over a few photos, without any context, I was just interested to catch up with what he was working on, out of the few dozen photos he sent I became transfixed on this image, the content has no immediate grand concept and yet it’s ambiguity had possessed me. Listening through the finished mix now, the sound and the image have become one, the narrative they evoke together
is expansive and personable, I would hope this is an expectation of listeners of my chin-stroke-type-beat music anyway, to sit and stare into space and let their mind wander, perhaps to places they wouldn’t normally be comfortable to explore" - Kinn

No holding back, Jinjé (Lee Malcom) throws down some dance-floor calefaction on this edition 18 of the Mesh Mix Series. It covers sonic sketches across the electronic spectrum to IDM, garage, glitchy acid stompers to 4/4 abrasive bass rollers. 

It's a much welcomed contribution to the series, after Mesh released Jinjé's debut 4 track this year, entitled "Open Unity" which was a reference to Malcolms' love of rave culture and the community aspect it provides - which this mix further seemingly provides homage too.

Mesh Series 018: Jinjé

A curated series where we commission artists to make a mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce and what they listen to.

The latest Mesh mix arrives in the form of bristolian artist and producer, Thomas Ridley. Cutting his teeth in the world of analogue electronic composition and live performance. Thomas takes a collage-like approach to recording and resampling a small collection of analogue instruments, in search of compositions that are imaginative and unwieldy. 

This mix showcases the dark, often euphoria inducing, clubbier sounds to his musical palette, and at intervals applying a psy-bending-repetitive blend of beats, tones, vocals and stabs. Listen loud.

@joachim-spieth sent us a Pop Ambient mix to bring harmony to the coziest time of the year. Spieth, known for his past releases on Kompakt, is a producer, DJ, and the founder of the label Affin.

Leftfield is a British electronic music group formed in 1989. It began as the duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley. In January 2010 Barnes resurrected Leftfield without Daley and, after touring for a few years, finished writing new material for a third album entitled Alternative Light Source. Daley declined to be involved and is focusing upon his solo career. The duo was very influential in the evolution of electronic music in the 1990s, with Mixmag describing them as "the single most influential production team working in British dance music". As with many of their contemporaries, such as the Chemical Brothers, Leftfield was notable for their use of guest vocalists in their works. Among those involved were Toni Halliday on "Original", Johnny Rotten on "Open Up", Djum Djum on "Afro-Left", and Earl 16 and Cheshire Cat on "Release the Pressure". The term progressive house was coined to define their style, a fusion of house with dub and reggae.

In an interview with Neil Barnes and Paul Daley of the group, published in 2017 on The Skinny, Paul Daley mentioned how John Peel influenced Leftfield via dub and reggae: "Dub and reggae had been around in my life from punk gigs of the mid seventies, and listening to the John Peel late night shows of the late seventies – it had a big influence on a lot of the feel of Leftism."

Next up, we have Amsterdam-based producer and visual artist Tensen Park sharing his perception of Far Blue with us. For this mix, he was inspired by the idea of meandering between more human and emotional songs and more alien/ethereal material. This  has resulted in a beautiful one-hour journey flowing through ambient, electronica, breaks and downtempo.

“I love the idea of zooming out on our planet and humanity. Not too far away, but far enough that you can’t hear the distinct voices anymore; yet close enough to get what it means to be human. Like squinting your eyes so everything gets comfortably vague and blurred together. Emotional, but not identified with stories. Just distorted and subdued visions, mixed with the unknown. 

I tried to give this feeling a place in sound with a bunch of my favorite songs and some of my own creations.”

A Far Blue concept by Tensen Park - 'World from afar'

The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records.

Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power.

Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. "Every time DJ Koze comes out of the woodwork to drop a 12-inch—or even just a remix—we usually end up hearing it everywhere for months on end," wrote former RA editor Andrew Ryce.

Kozalla talks to RA contributor (and former editor) Matt Unicomb about his production process and early influences—an uncanny combination of Basic Channel and Public Enemy—as well as his forthcoming album, Music Can Hear Us, coming out on Pampa Records on April 4th. Ben Lukas Boysen has made a career out of transforming unusual sounds into compelling music. His first electronic compositions at 18 were experiments with samplers and tape loops leading to an album in 2003 and the subsequent foundation of his own Berlin studio. Since, he has produced multiple albums (many under the alias HECQ), and led numerous workshops on composition and sound aesthetics, as well as creating custom sound design for films, commercials, video games and installations. Boysen’s first film score for „Restive" premiered in 2011, followed by his debut album under his own name in 2013, and the award-winning score for the Sony Playstation game, Everything, in 2016 as well as Amazon series „BEAT“ in 2018 and the score for the  film adaptation of best seller „The Collini Case“ in 2019.

It’s an apt name for multimedia artist Max Cooper’s electronic imprint, where the MO is clattering rhythms and voluminous ambient vistas; sound as a vehicle for big ideas. Cooper’s exclusive Bleep mix celebrates the achievements of Mesh with a collection of works from their discography, featuring the ambient swells of Rob Clouth and some especially crisp breakbeat re-alignments from the likes of Reid Willis and Synkro.
