A slow-burning sometimes creeping mix from NYC-based DJ yumi, with the tempo hitting that sweet spot. She's part of the In Your Dirty Ears crew who run the new music staple newsletter of the same name - a favourite of ours! Through In Your Dirty Ears, the artists have hosted shows on French station LYL Radio as well as the go-to local community station The Lot Radio. Yumi has contributed to series such as Daisychain and Accidental Meetings and is a go-to selector in NYC, being booked to play at the likes of Public Records, Mood Ring, Jupiter Disco, Knockdown Center and more. She will soon be coming over to London for a cute party at Ormside Projects - playing for three local parties Cozi, Terra Obscura and Local Knowledge - alongside fellow In Your Dirty Ears member Amelia Holt, Kia, avsluta, Alicia, Gi Gi, Jazz and Roy Mills. Speaking about the inspiration behind the mix, yumi says, "there were a couple of tracks I came across in the past two months that I couldn't stop listening to (Mr. Curtains - Hop, Fibre Optixxx - Slugmist, and Wilted Woman - Tick) so it felt right to use them as a starting point for the mix. I colored it in from there with some other fire tracks that I love for a slippery, sludgy, creepy vibe."

It has always been a struggle to sum up the sounds of Zuli. The Egyptian sound artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist is restlessly creative and unconventional in what he does. He can do everything from rap, IDM, footwork to hardcore jungle and experimental rhythms, and mainly on Lee Gamble’s UIQ label. He's also done a lot for his native Cairo scene as co-founder of both the Kairo is Koming (KIK) and AHOMA collectives, and former co-head of the city's alternate music venue VENT which later turned into a club night and festival. He's now firmly established in the wider European scene, not least in part thanks to his excellent radio show on NTS. 

There is no messing around on this week's mix. It's a dystopian soundtrack that unites Arab music, Chicago club, European techno and UK bass. Every track fizzes with energy, prickly percussion or distorted drums. It's intricate yet heavy, dense yet atmospheric and the warped designs and contorted rhythms make an art form of physicality.

LCY was born and bred in Bristol, soaking up the city's rich soundsystem culture, which still plays a crucial part in their music. Bill Kouligas is the mind behind one of modern electronic music's greatest and most innovative labels, PAN. His remarkable ear for music meant that he released some of the earliest records from luminaries like Yves Tumor, Helena Hauff and Eartheater, helping to jumpstart several remarkable careers. And each PAN release is lovingly and lavishly packaged like an art object in itself, an approach you can read more about in this month's feature-length cover story.

The Berlin artist's RA Podcast is an audio companion to that cover story, and it underlines not only Kouligas's range as a label A&R but also as a DJ. Reflecting the label's evolution from straight-up noise to musique concréte to leftfield dance music and then avant-pop, the mix cycles through stages of strange, staggered beats, almost celestial ambient music, passages of overwhelming noise and sound that sublimate into floating clouds before solidifying back into club music, and a couple engaging spoken word passages and endless manipulations of the human voice. In other words, it sounds a lot like PAN.
