He founded the labels Mental Disorder and Evidence and was part of the PoleGroup collective for a decade. Collaborations with Surgeon, Oscar Mulero and Exium, as well as releases on many legendary labels, are part of his discography. We are so lucky to release this mix for our 37th entry, recorded live at SmartBar (Chicago) by our friend and excellent DJ Shanti!

From the artist:
I am so grateful to be able to share this mix with you all through PPRZ! This is a mix that was recorded at Smartbar in Chicago when I opened for Lady Starlight as part of Justin Aulis Long's series, Flowers of Romance. It was a 3-hour long set from 10pm-1am on a Pioneer V10 Mixer with 3-4 CDJ 3000s. 

What I love about opening sets is having the ability to set the tone for the night as people are arriving and making the transition from wherever they came from to the communal embodiment of dancing. The other fascinating element about an opening set is the dramatic contrast between the beginning and end as one first experiences an empty dance floor and sees the gradual process of it growing with energy and feeling even though I can really only see beautiful silhouettes moving in the darkness. I take an opening set to be about the gradual cultivation of energy but also an opportunity for creative tension and exercising restraint for the headliner and rest of the night.

Bio:
Shanti is a Chicago-based DJ who explores philosophical themes of existential angst and ambiguity through surreal, foreboding, and atmospheric soundscapes. Her sets weave a story of the simultaneous despair and yearning that are intertwined with the human condition. 

While she is thoughtful about curating multifaceted energy and emotion within her sets, she also co-curates events such as Otherworldly Ambiguity as Evanti, a conceptual experience centered around the phenomenon of hybridity, occupying the spaces in between and outside of pre-existing concepts and rigid categories. She is also a part of Chicago-based DJ collective and label, Research & Development which is a mix series and curator of multifaceted music-centered experiences.

Following his latest album Songs Of Love And Decay for Dekmantel, Broken English Club serves a mix of furiously scrubbing bass and strutting and stomping rhythms. The swirling signal scratches of Russell Haswell combined with Sunn O)))’s continuous pummel of guitars are folded into coursing industrial techno beats from Ansome as BEC layers four tracks on top of each other for an intense opening salvo of rhythm and noise. What follows is no less unrelenting: the electricity of Scalameriya zaps and groans like the pulverising kicks and thumps are eviscerating the track’s machinery, and Samuel Kerridge’s ‘Propagates Of Desire’ is an obsidian trip through thorn-riddled electro, with visceral, ominous, foreboding spoken word from Aaron Turner.

Berlin’s Refracted has been a name dear to us for some time, having contributed a remix to our inaugural label release nearly six years ago. The Paral·lel co-curator and resident has cultivated a devoted following over the years for his uncompromising vision developed through a remarkable catalog of releases for label such as Silent Season, Bitta, Sublunar and his own Mind Express. For our series Refracted contributes a mix true to his signature style, crystalline and patiently layered with unwavering intent, drawing across decades and genres to invite us into a divine state of mind. For this month's Unrush mix, we're excited to feature Eric Cloutier - a true digger with a deep history in the scene and an ear for detail. His 90-minute guest mix flows through warm, textured ambient with darker, rhythmic turns: subtle, patient, and always engaging.

Cloutier’s path has taken him from Detroit to New York, where his years as a regular at The Bunker New York helped shape his distinct style: deep, body-oriented music with a strong sense of narrative. Now based in Berlin and a resident at Tresor, he continues to bring that same focus and depth to clubs and listeners around the world.

With a straightforward, no-nonsense approach, he has spent years honing his craft. His label Palinoia - named after the act of repeating something until it’s mastered - reflects that mindset: a home for stripped-back, dubby techno and lesser-known talent that fits seamlessly into his sets.
