With the recent passing of Mika Vainio, we share an early live recording from him with Panasonic (later known as Pan Sonic), the experimental group that he co-founded. The Finnish pioneer was an inspiration to many electronic producers and also produced solo material under his own name as well as Ø and Philus, amongst others. Jeff Waye invited Panasonic to play at a night in Montreal in 1996 and shares this story about the recording;
"Back in the early 90's myself and Linus Booth had started a record label, Discreet/Indiscreet Records. To launch one our releases by David Kristian we decided we needed one of our favourite groups Panasonic to come headline. With zero idea of how to throw an event, we somehow got two Finns and a bunch of gear over the border and set up at a closed down rap club (which fortunately hadn't had the PA stripped out). The power of being naive made for a great show. Afterwards went back to our place and listened to dub records with Mika, Ilpo, and Tommi Grunlond until sun came up and followed Pan Sonic right through their career from that point. Upon learning of Mika Vainio's passing and the ensuing nostalgia I remembered I had a DAT tape of that night. So here it is... Panasonic's set from that night in all its glory."

Lawrence le Doux is impossible to pin down. The Belgian has been beating his own path since the nineties under a range of different guises. His latest album Host—following a soundtrack on Hivern Discs and years of everything from rap to hardcore to ambient—came on his home label Vlek and was an embodiment of the last 30 years of electronic music in his homeland. From digital dub to house to industrial, it covers plenty of ground in authentic style and made for a fascinating listen. 

Over more than eighty minutes here, he serves up an equally kaleidoscopic mix filled with beautiful moments. It’s a late night affair that takes in ambient house, trippy 5am techno, dubbed out grooves, beguiling broken beats, trance, afro and plenty in between. Transitions feel natural and coherent even if, on paper, they shouldn’t. It’s a mix that comprehensively proves Lawrence le Doux’s understanding and knowledge of electronic music runs deep.

She is a New York-based DJ, producer and electronics artist that operates a laboratory of self-made sequencers and synthesizers using vintage telephone equipment. Known for her inventive soundscapes and eclectic vinyl DJ sets. She dives into acid-laced techno, shimmering electro, shadowy atmospheres and beyond, with a particular ear for odd percussions and syncopations. Her releases on LIES, The Bunker New York and Silent Season showcase her talented and unique approach to music making.
