Hamilton Frederick Bohannon (born March 7, 1942), often credited and known professionally simply as Bohannon, is an American percussionist, band leader, songwriter and record producer, who was one of the leading figures in 1970s disco music.

He was born in Newnan, Georgia, and learned the drums at school. He began playing in local bands, one of which featured guitarist Jimi Hendrix, before graduating from Clark College, Atlanta with a degree in music and secondary education. After a brief period as a schoolteacher, he was recruited in 1964 as drummer in 13-year-old Stevie Wonder's touring band. He moved to Detroit in 1967, where he was employed by Motown as the leader and arranger of Bohannon & The Motown Sound, who provided backing for many of the label's top acts on tour, including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops and others.

When Motown moved from Detroit to Los Angeles, Bohannon stayed behind to form his own ensemble, featuring members of local band, The Fabulous Counts and including such musicians as Ray Parker Jr. and Dennis Coffey. He signed in 1972 with the Dakar label run by producer Carl Davis, and released his debut album Stop & Go in early 1973. This was followed by five more albums for the label over the next two years, on which he "perfected his formula of heavy, thudding bass accents and aggressive rhythms". Although several of his tracks were club hits, he had limited chart success. His first hit single, in 1974, was "South African Man", which reached no.78 on the Billboard R&B chart but had more success in the UK, where it reached no.22 on the pop chart. This was followed up in 1975 by "Foot Stompin Music" - his only record to reach the US Hot 100 - and "Disco Stomp", his biggest hit in the UK where it reached number 6.

In 1976, Bohannon signed to Mercury Records and two years later had one of his biggest successes with "Let’s Start The Dance," which reached no.9 on the R&B chart and no.7 on the disco chart. "Let's Start the Dance" featured singer Carolyn Crawford, whose subsequent albums Bohannon went on to produce. In 1981, a new mix of "Let's Start the Dance" was successful on the dance charts. In 1980 he established Phase II Records and continued to have minor hits on the R&B chart for the next three years, using new vocalists Liz Lands and Altrinna Grayson.He signed with MCA Records in 1984 and released several more albums. His last album, It's Time To Jam, was issued on the South Bound label in 1990.

Originally released in March 2006 and virtually impossible to procure on vinyl ever since, BBE are excited to announce a special ten year anniversary edition of the classic Visioneers album Dirty Old Hip Hop. Brainchild of 4hero and Reinforced Records founder Marc Mac, the Visioneers project first appeared on a series of limited edition 7” vinyl releases. Marc began re-imagining his favourite hip hop beats from the golden era, retaining the feel of those extended, looping grooves whilst also re-introducing the excitement and musicianship of the records from which they were sampled: ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ was born. Drawing on the musical talents of Somatik and drummer Luke Parkhouse, both regulars on the 4hero sessions, this largely instrumental album also featured stunning performances from rappers Capitol A and Voice. An artist who was introduced to jazz music by his favourite hip hop beat-makers, ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ serves as a loving tribute to both art-forms, weaving the two together until even the most ardent purist will find it hard to define any space between. Dirty Old Hip Hop was shortlisted for Gilles Peterson‘s coveted Worldwide album of the Year award in 2006.

Mosaic is a heavy new three-track EP from a band whose reputation exploded this spring with the release of debut album Murmuration. 

Lead track Mosaic is full of the warmth of this heatwave-summer, syncopation and groove in abundance. Driving melodic lines and keyboard atmospherics suddenly give way to one of James O’Keefe’s most powerful guitar solos to date, wild and psychedelic. 

Transcoso brings you the down-tempo magic that they have become so much loved for. Heavily inspired by Azimuth, an hypnotic beat from drummer Jonny Drop eventually builds to a euphoric, almost slow disco climax for the final section. 

And finally, Mariposa is a timely tribute. Debuted at their London album launch this take on the Freeez classic (although the live version in particular) explores a little more of the South London, Brit Funk influences that really drive the band.

One of Australia’s most promising jazz-centric labels is offering a tasting plate of its 2020 artists and we’re pretty excited to share with you a quality premiere track to spread the good word. Melbourne label La Sape has compiled seven original tracks from seven Aussie acts for its seventh release, downundaground. Throughout 2020, releases from each act will hit the internet via La Sape.

This is an eclectic mix. Musical director and label mainstay Horatio Luna (whose music we’ve premiered before) and label boss Kurt Paradise have pulled together sounds from the periphery of that which lies under the wide musical umbrella of ‘jazz’. From the slow and dreamy opener by Astral Flex to Proto Moro’s driving, psychedelic, 4x4-rhythms, the variety is broad and musicality deep. Live instrumentation, improvisation and jazz are the only rules here.

Our premiere comes from one of the three bands of renowned Melburnian saxophonist, Josh Kelly. JK Group’s Nutha One begins with Kamaal-Williams-esque synth stabs and Josh’s effects- drenched saxophone ringing in the background over snappily syncopated drums. The sax backs off only to coax out a keys solo and strings that, combined, could fittingly soundtrack a summer night stroll down a lively street. The smooth sonic walk turns sharply but purposely left, however, into something more like a run, as a house beat and sax take us to the track’s sudden and dramatic end.

It’s a fun listen, and one worth bookmarking for its December 13 release. Other artists to feature on the record are On-Ly, Antiphon, Foshe and Big Chief.

PREMIERE: JK Group - Nutha One

Worldwide Awards 'Label of the Year' First Word Records is very proud to welcome Werkha to the stable with an all new EP, 'The Rigour'. Werkha hails from Manchester originally and released his debut EP back in 2012. Following early praise from Gilles Peterson and the like, he we went on to release a series of records for Brighton-imprint Tru Thoughts , including an album in 2015, 'Colours Of A Red Brick Raft ', and co-writing / producing Bryony Jarman-Pinto 's debut album in 2019. He's provided remixes for Quantic, Marcos Valles, Dutch Uncles, Andrew Ashong & J-Felix , toured across Europe with Bonobo, Mr Scruff & Chet Faker and is working with poet / singer Keisha Thompson , additionally to composing music for documentaries. 

So to the EP, and we set off with the delectable synth-boogie of 'Generation X', laden with strings from Simran Singh. Next up is the 4/4 low-slung head-nodding funk of 'The Key' featuring the vocal talents of Berry Blacc, before we head into some mid-tempo clavinet-lead hip hop vibes on 'Swing Thru'; lush strings again ably complementing and contrasting the bass-weight within the track. 'In Sunny G' follows next, picking the tempo back up a touch with a soulful vocal hook from Ellen Beth Abdi delivering blissed-out sun-glazed sonics, as the title would suggest. This 5-track opus closes out with ' Favourite Corner'; similarly to the EP opener, this is more playfully groovy breakbeat, laced with strings, a swagged-out guitar lick and assorted arpeggiated keys. As to the meaning of the title 'The Rigour',
Werkha says... "Music is work. In all its different ways, it's a craft that I apply myself to and exist by. As much as that is about love, it's also about
pouring in time, effort, patience & rigour. This record is about reflecting on my process and the identity of Werkha as a part of my life."

their process. They all go through the rigor of being played with, pushed and pulled in different directions... " 
Werkha has become known for a uniquely eclectic blend of electronics, broken beat, soul and jazz, nestled in an intersection of truly innovative British club music, and exemplified on this EP. 'The Rigour' is released on First Word Records on vinyl & digital, Friday January 17th 2020.
